Thomas HEWIT (c1730-1782)

and Mary BROOKER (1730-?)

 

Thomas Hewit and Mary Brooker married on 22 July 1753 in East Lavant, Sussex.  There was also a couple named Thomas Hewitt and Mary who had 5 children baptised in Cocking, Sussex from 1768 until 1783.

Thomas Hewett may have been baptised on 5 September 1729 in Cocking, Sussex, and have been the son of John Hewett (1700-1767) and Mary Eldridge (1698-1770).  But the Thomas who married in East Lavant may also have had a brother William who was of Hamble, Hampshire when he married.  Thomas was buried on 6 January 1782 in East Lavant.

Mary Brooker was baptised on 6 November 1730 in East Lavant, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Brooker and Sarah Pooke.

 

Thomas Hewit and Mary Brooker had 3 known children:

  1. Thomas Hewet was born in September 1753 and baptised on 15 November 1753 in East Lavant.  His parents were recorded as Thomas and Mary in the baptism register.  He died aged 87 years on 3 March 1840 in Bull Lane, Northampton, Northamptonshire and was buried on 6 March 1840 at St. Sepulchre's Parish Church in Northampton.  His cause of death was old age. 

    Thomas enlisted in the 2nd Dragoon Guards Queens Bay on 1 July 1771 in Godalming, Surrey.  He was promoted to Corporal on 11 March 1786 at Ipswich, Suffolk and then to Sergeant on 24 June 1794 at Chelmsford, Essex.  On 24 March 1794 he was a Recruiting Sergeant at Guildford, Surrey.   He retired from the army in 1798 in Sarum, Wiltshire.   

    Thomas married Eleanor Walker by banns on 28 December 1783 in the Cathedral in Manchester, Cheshire.  The witnesses to the marriage were Robert Branson and Henry Cappinall. 

    Eleanor was born on 12 June 1755 in Carridean, Bo'Ness, West Lothian, Scotland.  She died on 8 March 1842 at 11 Newbold Street, Leamington, Warwickshire.  She was also buried at St. Sepulchre's on 12 March 1842. 

    Thomas and Eleanor had 3 known children:

    1. Thomas Hewett was born in 1786 in the Army Barracks in Colchester, Essex.  He died on 24 January 1864 at 4 Mill Street, Leamington.  Thomas married Mary Ann Albrey before 1816.  She was born in 1791 in Chelmsford and was the daughter of Thomas Albrey.  She died on 29 July 1862 at 4 Mill Street.

    2. Mary Hewett was born on 12 November 1789 and baptised on 9 December 1789 in Linlithgow, Scotland

    3. John Hewett was born on 7 March 1795 in the Army Barracks in Norwich and baptised on 24 March 1795 at St. James Pockthorpe in Norwich, Norfolk.  He died on 2 February 1864 at 1 Lower Parade, Leamington.  John married Martha Fitzhugh on 6 April 1824 at All Saints, Northampton.  She was born in 1801 in Northampton and was the daughter of Samuel Fitzhugh and Elizabeth Hopkins.  Martha died on 27 September 1855 in Woodlands Villa, 2 Clarenden Street, Leamington.

  2. John Hewett was baptised on 23 November 1755 in East Lavant.  His parents were recorded as Thomas and Mary in the baptism register.

  3. William Hewt was baptised on 20 May 1764 in East Lavant.  His parents were recorded as Thomas and Mary in the baptism register.  He was buried on 3 October 1803 in East Lavant.  William was a Corporal in the Queens Bay Army.

John Huett was buried on 4 April 1774 in East Lavant.

William Hewett, infant was buried on 25 October 1792 in East Lavant.

Elizabeth Hewett was buried on 6 December 1796 in East Lavant.
