John HEWETT (1700-1767)

and Mary ELDRIDGE (1698-1770)

John Hewett and Mary Eldridge married on 21 January 1720/1 in Cocking, Sussex.  He was then of Cocking and she may also have been of Cocking or Easebourne, Sussex.

John Hewett was baptised on 4 August 1700 in Cocking.  He was the son of John Hewett (1668-1743) and Abigail Larby (1665-1714).  He was buried on 21 March 1767 in Cocking.  His will was dated 2 December 1749 and witnessed by Mary Allen, Mary Read and H. Beale.  It was proved on 27 July 1767 before W. Muhard Tireman clerk surrogate by the oath of Mary Hewett, widow and sole executor.

Mary Eldridge was baptised on 20 April 1698 in Stedham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Thomas Eldridge and Ann White.  She was buried on 1 November 1770 in Cocking.

John Hewett and Mary Eldridge had 4 known children:

  1. Mary Hewett was baptised on 11 April 1721 in Cocking.  She may have married William Budd by licence on 2 June 1756 in Singleton, Sussex.  She was then of Singleton and he of Westhampnett, Sussex.  The witnesses to the marriage were Robert Cobden and Robert Matthews.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and recorded that she was a 35 year old spinster and he a 36 year old yeoman and bachelor.  But the Mary married to William may have been the daughter of Thomas Hewett and Mary Newman who married on 12 November 1717 in Cocking.  They were both then said to be of Singleton.  They had had a son Thomas Huet baptised in Singleton in 1718.  William and Mary had the following son:

    1. Charles Budd was baptised on 5 August 1757 in Singleton.

  2. John Hewett was baptised on 20 October 1723 in Cocking.  He may have married Sarah Farns in 1746.  (They have their own page.)

  3. William Hewett was baptised on 18 September 1726 in Cocking.  He may have married Mary Philip on 7 November 1751 in Cocking.  But there was another William Hewett who was born in 1712.  Or was he the William Huet who married Mary Hobjin on 11 January 1751/2 in East Lavant, Sussex.  At the time William was said to be of Hamble in Hampshire.  William and Mary had the following son:

    1. William Hewett was baptised on 22 April 1752 in Cocking.  He may have married Ann Andrew by licence on 21 October 1773 in Bepton, Sussex.  They were both of Bepton.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Turner and John Brown.  William signed his name as William Hewett.  Their marriage licence was issued on 11 October 1773 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and recorded that he was a 22 year old bachelor and husbandman, whilst she was a 40 year old widow.  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and William Green a farmer of West Dean.

  4. Thomas Hewett was baptised on 5 September 1729 in Cocking.  Did he marry Mary Brooker on 22 July 1753 in East Lavant, Sussex, or did he marry another Mary sometime before 1668 and settle in Cocking?
