John HEWETT (1668-1743)

and Abigail LARBY (1665-1714)

John Hewett and Abigail Larby married on 16 November 1694 in Petworth, Sussex.  He was then of Cocking and she of Petworth.

John Hewett was baptised on 20 July 1668 in Cocking, Sussex.  He was the son of John Hewett (1629-1707) and Joan Purslow (c1640-1720).  He was buried on 24 September 1743 in Cocking.  His grandfather was a clothworker and his brother a weaver.  When his brother William married in 1702, a John Hewett clothier of Cocking provided surety, but which John provided surety, this one or his father?

Abigail Larby was baptised on 13 February 1664/5 in Fittleworth, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Larby and Ann.  She was buried on 21 January 1713/4 in Cocking.

John Hewett and Abigail Larby had 4 known children:

  1. John Hewett was baptised on 25 May 1695 in Cocking and probably died as an infant.

  2. John Hewett was baptised on 4 August 1700 in Cocking.  His mother's name was recorded as Alice in the baptism register.  He married Mary Eldridge in 1721.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Thomas Hewet was baptised on 26 February 1705/6 in Cocking and buried there on 20 September 1706.

  4. Sarah Hewitt was baptised on 9 May 1708 in Cocking.  She may have married William Burgess by licence dated 19 January 1730/1.  The marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester and recorded that Sarah was a spinster of Cocking, but stated that in the bond her name was recorded as Jane.  He was a bachelor and yeoman of Alington, Surrey.  Surety for the licence was proved by William himself and Thomas Cooksley a victualler of Chichester.  No children for either William and Sarah or William and Jane have been recorded in the IGI.  There was a Jane Hewett born in 1714.
