John HEWETT (1629-1707)

and Jone PURSLOW (c1640-1720)

John Hewett and Jone Purslow married on 11 January 1663/4 in Milland alias Tuxlith, Sussex.  Their marriage was not recorded in the parish registers but was found in the Bishops Transcripts.

John Huett was baptised on 15 March 1628/9 in Cocking, Sussex.  He was the son of William Hewett (c1590-1659) and Elizabeth Tribe (c1600-1666).  He was buried on 4 March 1706/7 in Cocking.  His father was a clothworker; might this have also been John's occupation?  When John's son William married in 1702, a John Hewett clothier of Cocking provided surety for the marriage licence, but was it father or son?  John was appointed the sole executor of his father's will and after certain legacies were distributed, John was to receive the remainder of his father's estate.  John's will was dated 24 January 1704/5 and was witnessed by Richard Panell and John Andrews.  His widow was appointed the sole executor and his will was proved in April 1707 before Thomas Brigod.

Jone Purslow was born in 1640 in Tuxlith alias Milland and was the daughter of John Purslow and Urcelah.  Joane was buried on 11 February 1719/20 in Cocking.

John Hewett and Joan Purslow had 6 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Hewett may have been born about 1662 in Cocking.  She married may have married John Coal on 17 October 1704 in Cocking.  They may have had the following daughter:

    1. Marye Coale was baptised on 16 April 1707 in Selham, Sussex.

  2. Mary Hewett may have been born about 1664 in Cocking.

  3. Katharine Hewett was baptised on 10 March 1666/7 in Cocking and buried there on 24 March 1666/7.

  4. John Hewett was baptised on 20 July 1668 in Cocking.  He married Abigail Larby in 1694.  (They have their own page.)

  5. William Hewett was baptised on 20 August 1671 in Cocking.  He married Mary Hopkin in 1702.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Joane Hewett was baptised on 1 August 1677 in Cocking.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  She or a niece may have married Richard Carpenter on 23 April 1719 in Midhurst, Sussex.  He was then of Easebourne, Sussex.
