Thomas HEPDEN (c1500-?)

and Unknown

Thomas Hepden was my 13x Great Grandfather.  (Click here to see his place in my pedigree chart.)  He may have been in Burwash by about 1540.

The Burwash Hepdens descend from a Thomas Hebden, who "came out of the north and had issue" (Le Neve, Visitations, Harleian Soc Vol ?25).  This in the C16 and from late records estimate his birth as c1500/1540 almost certainly in Yorkshire.  Later they were Puritans and also ironmasters; they are mentioned in Strakers "Wealden Iron" published c1933, and occupied Holmshurst in or near Burwash.  (Thanks to Dennis for this data.)

Sometime before 1527 he bought Stonehouse in Brightling, Sussex.  By 1536 the property had passed to John Hepden.

Thomas Hepden and unknown had 1 known son:

  1. John Hepden (c1520-1583) - my 12x Great Grandfather, married Joan Wenham.  (They have their own page.)

From "Wealdon Iron" by E. Straker - 1539 Sir William Sidney exchanges land in Yorkshire including Hull for Sussex ironworks (Burwash?).
