Goddard HEPDEN (c1550-1633)

and Anne FRYE (c1552-1641)

Goddard Hepden and Anne Frye were my 11x Great Grandparents. (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married sometime before or about 1580. No possible marriage has been found in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.

Goddard Hepden may have been born in about 1550 in Burwash, Sussex. He was the son of John Hepden (c1520-1583) and Joan Wenham (c1522-1591). He was buried on 18 March 1633 in Burwash. He left a will which was proved on 18 March 1632/3 (ref Lewes A22, 89). He had Holmshurst in Burwash built in 1610, which bears his initials GH. From 1622 to 1633 he was the tenant of Stonehouse in Brightling and it was recorded in the Robtersbridge Manorial records that he was buried on 28 March 1633.

Anne Frye was born about 1552 in Ringmer, Sussex. She was the daughter of Nicholas Frye (c1526-1599) and Elizabeth. According to the IGI she was buried on 27 May 1641. Her will was proved on 27 May 1641.

Goddard Hepden and Anne Frye had 12 known children:

Elizabeth Hepden was baptised on 16 October 1581 in Burwash. She was named in her grandmother's will of 1587. Another source puts her birth at about 1592. Might this Elizabeth have died young and then another daughter also named Elizabeth have been born to Goddard and Anne?
Elizabeth marrried George Deering in about 1613, Burwash.
John Hepden was baptised on 1 September 1583 in Burwash. He was named in his grandmother's will of 1587.
Retorne Hepden (son) was baptised on 25 July 1585 in Warbleton, Sussex. He was named in his grandmother's will of 1587.
Godsgift Hepden or Goodguift Hepden (daughter) may have been born in 1580 or 1587 in Burwash and she may also have been baptised in 1592 in Warbleton. She was named in her grandmother's will of 1587.
Godsgift married Zabulon Newington in about 1605, but no possible marriage has been found in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.
Zabulon was baptised on 15 August 1583 in Ticehurst, Sussex and was the son of Joseph Newington and Dennis Putland. He died on 6 May 1634.
Zabulon and Godsgift had 12 known children:
1. Joseph Newington was baptised on 20 October 1606 in Burwash. He died on 8 November 1686. Joseph married Alice Langham on 1 October 1652 in Burwash.
2. Harbert Newington was baptised on 12 October 1607 in Ticehurst.
3. John Newington was baptised on 25 February 1609/10 in Burwash.
  John married Elizabeth Chele on 13 July 1637 in Iden.
  Elizabeth was born about 1620 and died in 1675.
  John and Elizabeth had the following children:
  1. Elizabeth Newington was born about 1641 in Salehurst. She was died or was buried on 10 September 1668.
  2. John Newington was born about 1641 in Salehurst. He died in 1706.
    John married Mary Luckhurst on 5 June 1676 in Ticehurst.
    Mary was born about 1649 and died in 1714.
    John and Mary had the following children:
    1. Elizabeth Newington was baptised on 2 March 1680 in Ticehurst.
    2. Zabulon Newington was baptised on 4 July 1682 in Ticehurst. He married Frances Burgess on 6 February 1706 in Ticehurst. Zabulon and Frances had the following children:
      1. Joseph Newington was born on 13 December 1707 and baptised on 17 December 1707 in Ticehurst. He was buried on 7 April 1790 in Ticehurst. Joseph married Mary Tompsett on 1 December 1729 in Ticehurst. Mary was born about 1708 in Ticehurst and was the daughter of James Tompsett and Sarah.
      2. John Newington was born on 18 April 1709 and baptised on 29 April 1709 in Ticehurst.
      3. Zabulon Newington was born on 25 July 1711 and baptised on 1 August 1711 in Ticehurst.
      4. Benjamin Newington was born on 15 February 1712 and baptised on 15 February 1712 in Ticehurst. He was buried in Ticehurst on 2 October 1755.
      5. Frances Newington was born on 16 February 1714 and baptised on 28 February 1714 in Ticehrust, and buried there on 25 November 1717.
      6. Samuel Newington was born and buried on 7 May 1717 in Ticehurst.
      7. Frances Newington was born on 4 December 1719 and baptised on 22 December 1719 in Ticehurst.
    3. Mary Newington was baptised on 12 March 1684 in Ticehurst.
    4. John Newington was baptised on 18 September 1687 in Ticehurst. He died in 1775.
    5. Benjamin Newington was born on 9 November 1690 and baptised on 27 November 1690 in Ticehurst.
  3. Benjamin Newington was born about 1643 in Salehurst.
  4. Zabulon Newington was born about 1645 in Salehurst. He died in 1706.
  5. Mary Newington was born about 1647 in Salehurst. Shed died in 1675.
4. Thomas Newington was baptised on 24 November 1611 in Burwash.
5. Sabulon Newington was baptised on 15 August 1613 in Burwash. He died on 6 November 1697.
6. Judith Newington was baptised on 17 September 1615 in Ticehurst.
7. Samuel Newington was baptised on 8 December 1616 in Ticehurst.
8. Nathaniel Newington was baptised on 30 March 1619/20 in Ticehurst.
9. Anne Newington was baptised on 28 January 1621/2 in Ticehurst.
10. Elizabeth Newington was baptised on 6 April 1623 in Ticehurst.
11. George Newington was baptised on 30 September 1627 in Ticehurst.
12. Benjamin Newington was baptised on 14 November 1630 in Ticehurst. He died on 19 April 1689.
Hopestill Hepden (daughter) was baptised on 30 November 1589 in Burwash. She was named in her grandmother's will of 1587. (She may have been born in about 1582.)
Hopestill married Samuel Newington on 21 September 1613 in Burwash.
Samuel was baptised on 6 January 1583 in Salehurst, Sussex and was the son of Morgan Newington and Elizabeth Stephens. Samuel was of Kingston Bowsey.
Samuel and Hopestill had 5 known children:
1. Thomas Newington was born about 1614. He married Elizabeth Brett in 1646.
2. Goddard Newington was born about 1616 in Hurstpierpoint.
3. Elizabeth Newington was born about 1618. She married Thomas Brett in 1642.
4. Sarah Newington was born about 1620.
5. Samuel Newington was born about 1622.
Fearnot Hepden (daughter) was baptised on 26 December 1591 in Burwash. She married Thomas Newington on 30 September 1619 in Burwash.
Thankfull Hepden (son) was baptised on 20 October 1594 in Burwash. He was buried in Burwash on 18 February 1675/6 and was then described in the burial register as a Gentleman.
Thankfull married twice, firstly Susan Selwood in about 1619. She was the daughter of Humphrey Selwood. Thankfull then married Frances daughter of Richard Brewer of West Farley in Kent.
Thankfull and Frances had the following children:
1. Samuel Hepden was baptised on 14 May 1648 in Burwash.
2. Thomas Hepden was baptised on 22 September 1649 in Burwash. His was his father's heir.
3. John Hepden was baptised on 18 January 1651 in Burwash.
4. Mary Hepden was baptised on 28 May 1657 in Burwash.
5. Elizabeth Hepden was baptised on 22 August 1658 in Burwash.
Constance Hepden, my 10x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 30 October 1596 in Burwash. She married Alexander Elliott in 1624. (They have their own page.)
Harber Hepden (son) was baptised on 31 October 1596 in Burwash and buried there on 13 August 1616. (Or was he the son of Thomas Hepden?) Might he have been baptised on 20 December 1601 in Burwash?
Goddard Hepden was on 31 December 1598 in Burwash.
A son was born and buried in November 1600 in Burwash.
A son was born and buried on 7 December 1604 in Burwash.
