William HENRY (c1655-1727)

and Ann EDWARDS (1673-1749)

William Henry and Ann Edwards were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence on 29 December 1695 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Fittleworth, Sussex.

William Henryís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was a coachman in Petworth, Sussex, from at least 1697 until his death.  William died aged 72 years and was buried on 28 July 1727 in Petworth, therefore, he was born about 1655.  Neither the Sussex marriage index nor the Sussex IGI lists any marriages for possible parents.  The IGI for Surrey records that a Richard Henry married Mary Dane on 13 September 1657 in Horne, Surrey, although the Surrey marriage index records that he was Richard Honywood of Horsham.  Horne to Fittleworth is about 50km or 30 miles.  Or, perhaps the spelling of William's surname had altered, from say Henty or Hendry?  Or perhaps William came from elsewhere in the country?  William's youngest son had children baptised as Freeharry, and a William Freeharrye (c1610-?) had married Dorothy Wady (c1620-?) on 25 October 1642 in Bury, Sussex - I think they are possibly 1655 William's parents.

Ann Edwards was baptised on 10 August 1673 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Edwards (c1650-1703) and Mary.  She was buried on 12 February 1748/9 in Petworth.

William Henry and Ann Edwards had 10 known children:

  1. St. Mary's, Petworth, from: Henry was born and baptised on 22 April 1697 in Petworth.  He died on 13 May and was buried on 14 May 1697 in Petworth.

  2. William Henry was born and baptised on 25 May 1698 in Petworth.

  3. John Henry was baptised in January 1699/1700 in Petworth.  The baptism register records that his father was a coachman.  Did he marry and was he the father of:

    1. William Henry was baptised on 12 February 1731 in Littlehampton, Sussex.

As William Henty did he marry Jane Olliver by licence on 5 October 1756 in Littlehampton?  The witnesses to their marriage were George Duke and Richard Heward.  Their marriage licence was issued on 30 September 1756 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, which recorded that he was a 24 year old bachelor and yeoman, whilst she was a 19 year old spinster and married with the consent of her uncle Thomas Olliver.  They were both of Littlehampton.  Surety for the licence was provided by William himself and Thomas Olliver a yeoman of Littlehampton.  (I am inclined to think he was a Henty rather than a Henry, as there were many Hentys in Littlehampton.)

  4. Thomas Henry was baptised on 8 January 1701/2 in Petworth.  The baptism register records that his father was a coachman.

  5. Mary Henry was baptised in Petworth sometime between 25 October 1703 and the end of the year in Petworth.

  6. Anthony Henry was baptised on 14 March 1705/6 in Petworth.

  7. Robertt Henry was baptised on 9 May 1708 in Petworth.

  8. Anne Henry was baptised on 30 December 1709 in Petworth.  She married Richard Carver in 1732.  (They have their own page.)

  9. Elizabeth Henry was baptised on 19 April 1713 in Petworth.

Elizabeth married John Moore by licence on 7 October 1739 in Amberley, Sussex.  At the time she was of Petworth and he was tanner.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester on 6 October 1739.  Edmund Sharp a gardener provided surety for the licence.

Before her marriage Elizabeth had 2 illegitimate children and then 10 known children by her husband:

    1. Elizabeth Hoad Henry was baptised on 2 January 1732/3 in Petworth.

    2. John More Henry was baptised on 9 April 1738 in Petworth.  He may have died young, or as John More he may have married Elizabeth Legg on 29 January 1764 in Petworth.  At the time he was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Petworth.  The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Dilloway and William Pullin.

    3. William More was born on 25 June and baptised on 27 June 1740 in Petworth.

    4. Debora Moore was baptised on 3 October 1742 in Petworth.

    5. Ann Moor was baptised on 14 January 1744 in Petworth.

    6. Samuel Moor was born on 16 February and baptised on 18 February 1747 in Petworth.

    7. Henry Moor was baptised on 7 January 1751 in Petworth.

    8. Elizabeth More was baptised on 28 May 1752 in Petworth.

    9. Mary Moor was baptised on 2 February 1755 in Petworth.

    10. Richard Moor was baptised on 1 July 1756 in Petworth.

    11. John Moor was baptised on 11 December 1757 in Petworth.

    12. Abel Moore was baptised on 8 April 1760 in Petworth.

  10. Joseph Henry, my 6x Great Grandfather was baptised on 7 August 1715 in Petworth.  He married Mary Heath in 1740.  (They have their own page.)

The forename Anthony is fairly unusual and may help identify earlier generations.  The IGI records that an Anthony Edwards was baptised in Petworth on 19 March 1588, the son of William Edwards.  But no marriage for this Anthony seems to have been included in the SFHG's marriage index or the IGI.

The Pulborough burial register records that a Michael Henry was buried there on 25 August 1658.  He may have been baptised on 29 September 1594 in Donnington, Sussex, and have been the son of John Henrie.
