George HEMSLEY (1809-1879)

and Lucy KNIGHT (1812-1900)

George Hemsley and Lucy Knight married by banns on 18 August 1832 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.  They were both then of Wivelsfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the 3x Great Grandparents of my cousins.)

George Hemsley was born on 16 May 1809 in Ditchling, Sussex, as per Job Hemsley's journal.  He was the son of Richard Hemsley (c1775-1830) and Dinah Fuller.  He died on 16 September 1879 at 6 Mays Cottage in Fishersgate and was buried in Southwick on 21 September 1879.  George was a blacksmith.

Lucy Knight's date and place of birth are unknown, to me.  She died on 2 November 1900 in the Steyning Union Workhouse and was buried in Portslade.  According to Job Hemsley's journal she was born on 24 June 1812 and I have seen elsewhere on the web that she was said to have been born on 24 November 1812 in Ditchling, but the 1851 census records her place of birth as Wivelsfield.  I wonder, might she had been born on 21 January 1813, the daughter of John Knight and Mary Whitbourn?  Her birth was registered at the Baptist Chapel in Wivelsfield on 14 May 1815 and her parents were then of Wivelsfield.  Or was she born on 15 November 1813, the daughter of James Knight and Lucy Norman and her birth registered on 18 September 1815 at the Baptist Chapel in Wivelsfield, at which time her parents were of Chailey?  A Lucy Knight of Wivelsfield married Jesse Knight of Chailey by banns on 1 May 1832 in Wivelsfield.  When the 1851 census was recorded, Jesse and Lucy were living in Chailey and Lucy gave her place of birth as Wivelsfield.

(I have a transcript of the Ditchling parish registers, which I have checked from 1809 to 1832 for George and Lucy's baptisms, but nothing has been recorded for either of them.)

George Hemsley and Lucy Knight had 11 known children:

  1. Harriet Hemsley was born on 2 November 1833 (as per Job's journal) and baptised on 7 December 1833 in Brighton.  She died on 11 March 1909 at the Steyning Union Workhouse.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was 18 years old and living at home.

Harriet married William Briggs on 2 June 1853 in Southwick.

William was the son of Henry Briggs.  He died on 12 March 1909 at the Steyning Union Workhouse.

William and Harriet had 5 known children.

  2. Richard Hemsley was born on 20 November 1835 (as per Job's journal) in Brighton and baptised there on 14 December 1835 at St. Nicholas parish church.  He died on 30 October 1921.  He was 16 years old at the time of the 1851 census.

  3. George William Hemsley was born on 30 December 1838 (as per Job's journal) in Brighton, but he would seem to have been baptised on 26 August 1838 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.  He died on 15 December 1900 at the Steyning Union Workhouse.  In 1851 he was 13 years old.

George married Harriet Pilbin on 27 March 1865 in Southwick.

Harriet was born about 1844 and was the daughter of Thomas Pilbin.  She died aged 65 years and was buried on 24 March 1909 in Southwick.

Before her marriage Harriet had an illegitimat son:

    1. Robert Pilbeam was born about 1862/3 in Brighton.  The 1871 census recorded that he was 8 year old Robert Hemsley.  As Robert Pilgrim he married Emily Jane Elliott on 31 January 1887 at St. Michael's in Southwick.  Emily was born about 1860 in Brighton.

Robert and Emily had the following children:

      1. Annie

    3. Harriet Mary Hemsley was baptised on 2 September 1877 at St. Andrew's in Portslade.  She married Harry Hicks Burtenshaw on 17 April 1897 at St. Michael's in Southwick.
