John HAYLOR (c1700-?)

and Ann JUPP (c1700-1741)

John Hayler and Ann Jup married on 21 May 1724 in Pulborough, Sussex.  They were both then of Pulborough.  John may have married after Ann's death to Mary Duffill on 16 May 1744 in Pulborough.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Hayler's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  A database at Ancestry.co.uk gives that he was baptised 12 May 1689 in Billingshurst, Sussex, the son of Christopher Elliott and Susannah Hayler, but that John was buried in Billingshurst on 25 March 1692.  Might he have been baptised on 15 February 1684/5 in Billingshurst, the son of John Hayler from Chiltington?

Ann Jupp's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 6 May 1741 in Pulborough.  The burial register noted that she was Anne wife of John Hayler.  Might she have been baptised on 17 November 1696 in West Chiltington, the daughter of Edward Jupp and Joan Strudwick?  An Anne Jupp was baptised on 14 September 1690 in Pulborough, the daughter of James Jupp, but given that her last known child was born in 1740, it would seem unlikely she was born in 1690.

Mary wife of John Hayler was buried on 27 September 1764 in Pulborough.  Another Mary wife of John Hayler was buried on 30 April 1770 in Pulborough.

John Hayler and Ann Jupp had 8 known children:

  1. Mary Hayler was baptised on 21 February 1724/5 in Pulborough and buried there on 10 March 1724/5.

  2. Sarah Hayler was baptised on 4 March 1725/6 in Pulborough.

  3. Susanna Hayler was baptised on 15 May 1728 in Pulborough and buried there on 4 May 1736.

  4. Hannah Hayler was baptised on 23 November 1732 in Pulborough and buried there on 12 December 1732.

  5. Martha Hayler was baptised on 11 December 1733 in Pulborough and buried there on 8 May 1736.

  6. Elizabeth Hayler was baptised on 11 December 1733 in Pulborough and buried there on 8 May 1736.

  7. William Hayler was baptised on 10 June 1737 in Pulborough.

William may have married Mary Adfield by banns on 24 July 1759 in Pulborough.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Foard and Daniel Searle.  However, another William Hayler was baptised on 28 February 1730 in Pulborough, the son of Thomas Hayler and Jane Greenfield.

  8. Priscilla Hayler was baptised on 3 May 1740 in Pulborough.  She married Luke Wady in 1759.  (They have their own page.)
