Richard HARRIS (1864-?)

and Sarah Edith Jane STEPHENS (1865-?)

Richard Harris and Sarah Edith Jane Stephens married in the fourth quarter of 1884 in the Chichester registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Richard Harris was born in the first quarter of 1864 in Chichester, Sussex.  He was the son of William Harris (1833-?) and Sarah Faith (1833-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded he was a 7 year old scholar and living with his parents at 29 North Street in the parish of St. Peter the Less, Chichester.  In 1881 he was a 17 year old apprentice and living with his parents in North Street in the St. Peter the Less parish of Chichester.  His father was then a bootmaker.

Sarah Edith Jane Stephens was born in the first quarter of 1865 in North Mundham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Alfred Stephens (c1823-?) and Fanny Ayling Bleach (c1829-?).  In 1871 she was a 5 year old scholar and living with her parents at Drayton Brick Kiln in North Mundham, Sussex.  Her father was then a brickmaker.  The 1881 census noted that she was 17 year old Jane Stephens and she was living at home with her parents at Bognor Road, Rumboldswyke, Sussex.  She was then a dressmaker's apprentice.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and 2 children were living at No. 4 The Hornet in the St. Pancrass parish of Chichester.  Richard was then 27 years old and working in a boot factory.  Sarah was 26.  He gave his place of birth as Chichester and she as Mundham.

In 1901 the family were living at 46 The Hornet, Chichester.  Richard was 37 years old and employed at home in a leather and boot factory.  Sarah was then 36.  They both gave their place of birth as Chichester.  Six of their children were at home on census night, along with 15 year old general domestic servant Mary Francis Marshall who was from Angmering, Sussex.

Richard Harris and Sarah Edith Jane Stephens had the following known children:

  1. Richard Reginals Harris was born in the fourth quarter of 1885 in Chichester.  He was 5 years old in 1891.  In 1901 Richard was a 15 year old apprentice in clothing and outfitting.

  4. Charles Percy Harris was born fourth quarter of 1893 in Chichester.  He was 7 years old in 1901.
