John HARDING (c1807-1883)

and Eliza STONER (1815-1892)

John Harding and Eliza Stoner married by banns on 26 May 1838 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  John was a labourer and bachelor from Lower Beeding and Eliza was a spinster from the same place.  Their fathers were named as James Harding a carpenter and John Stoner a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Stoner and James Edwards.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Harding may have been born about 1807 in Slaugham, Sussex, although in the 1861 census he said he was born in London.  John died aged 75 years and was buried on 31 October 1883 in Lower Beeding.

Eliza Stoner was baptised on 24 December 1815 in Cowfold, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Stoner (1781-1859) and Sarah Gibson (1787-1829).  Eliza died aged 77 years and was buried on 14 January 1892 in Lower Beeding.

Before her marriage she had an illegitimate son:

  1. Amos Stoner was baptised on 26 April 1835 in Slaugham.  In 1841 he was 6 years old and living in the home of his maternal grandfather.  The 1851 census records that he was 18 year old Amos Harding and he was living with his mother.  He was then an agricultural labourer and his place of birth was given as Beeding.

The 1851 census records that 44 year old John was an agricultural labourer living at Sandygate in Lower Beeding, along with his 36 year old wife Eliza and their 10 children.  Eliza's father was also living with them.  In 1861 the couple and their 10 children were living at Plummers Plain in Lower Beeding.  John was then a 55 year old agricultural labourer and said he was born in London, Middlesex.  Eliza was 47.

John Harding and Eliza Stoner had 13 known children:

  1. Selina Harding was born in Beeding and baptised on 11 November 1838 in Nuthurst.  She was a 12 year old scholar in 1851.

  2. William Harding was born about 1840 in Beeding.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents.

  3. George Harding was baptised on 11 July 1841 in Lower Beeding.  In 1851 he was a 10 year old scholar.  He was a 19 year old agricultural labourer in 1861.

  4. James Harding was baptised on 11 June 1843 in Lower Beeding.  He was an 8 year old agricultural labourer in 1851, although I think he was more likely to have been a scholar.  In 1861 he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer.

  5. Caroline Harding was baptised on 11 September 1844 in Lower Beeding.  She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851 and 16 years old in 1861.  She married Samuel Stredwick in 1867.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Fanny Harding was born about 1846 in Beeding.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1851.  Frances was 14 years old in 1861.

As Frances Harding she may have married William Henry Buckle by banns on 31 August 1870 in Lower Beeding.  He was a bachelor and painter of 3 Wood Street, North Finsbury, whilst she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Tatton Buckle, deceased and John Harding a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Harding and Margaret Garner.

  7. Ellen Harding was born about 1848 in Beeding.  She was a 3 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 she was 12 years old.

  8. Mary Ann Harding was baptised on 5 May 1850 in Lower Beeding.  As Mary Harding she may have died aged 17 years and have been buried on 16 March 1867 in Lower Beeding.  The 1851 census records that she was a year old and a scholar!  In 1861 she was an 11 year old scholar.

  9. Thomas Harding was born in 1851 in Lower Beeding.  At the time of the 1851 census he was 2 days old.  He died aged 3 years and was buried on 16 October 1854 in Lower Beeding.

  10. Edwin Harding was born about 1852 in Lower Beeding.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1861.

  11. Sarah Jane Harding was baptised on 2 December 1855 in Lower Beeding.  As Sarah Harding she may have been buried on 24 July 1872 in Lower Beeding, aged 17 years.  In 1861 she was 6 year old Sarah Jane.

  12. John Harding was baptised on 8 March 1857 in Lower Beeding.  He was 4 years old in 1861.

  13. Henry Harding was baptised on 22 February 1863 in Lower Beeding.
