John HAMES (c1654-1739)
and Elizabeth PAYNE (1656-1743)

John Hames
and
Elizabeth Payne
were my 7x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to
see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 26
January 1679/80 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
John Hames
was born in about 1654. He died aged 85
years and was buried on 5 December 1739 in West Hoathly. The burial
register records his name as John Hams. So far I've not found
whether he left a will, nor for any other earlier Hames.
He may have been the son of
John Hames
(1615-1679) and
Phillippa Tully
(1627-?), or the son of
Richard Hames
and
Susanna,
who had 2 children baptised in 1665 and 1669 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
Elizabeth Payne was born on 1
December 1656 in West Hoathly. She was the daughter of
5
197
Henry Payne (1625-?)
and
5
197
Mary Humphrey (1626-1679), although the West Hoathly
parish register records her mother's name as Elizabeth. Her birth
was registered, although she doesn’t seem to have been baptised. She was
buried on 10 April 1743 in West Hoathly, as Elizabeth Hams, widow.
Another Elizabeth Paine was baptised on 22 September 1659
in East Grinstead, the daughter of
Thomas Payne
and Joan.
They were the only Hams family to have had children baptised in West Hoathly
between 1680 and 1700.
John Hames and Elizabeth Payne had 8 known children:
-
Mary Hams
was baptised on 26 November 1684 in West
Hoathly. A transcript of the West Hoathly register records her
surname as Davis. Did she marry William Pepper on 28 April
1720 in Barcombe?
-
Elizabeth Hams
was baptised on 24 April 1686 in West
Hoathly. A transcript of the West Hoathly register records her
surname as Harris. Did she marry James Hobbs on 16 April 1716
in Barcombe, Sussex? He was then of East Hoathly, Sussex.
-
Sarah Hams
was baptised on 12 February 1687/8 in West
Hoathly. A transcript of the West Hoathly register records her
surname as Harris. She may have been buried on 29 October 1745 in
West Hoathly. The burial register only records that Sarah
Hams was buried.
-
Anne Hams
was baptised on 23 March 1688/9 in West
Hoathly.
-
John Hams
was baptised on 7 November 1691 in West
Hoathly.
John married
Elizabeth Hall
on 17 April 1718 in Balcombe, Sussex.
John and Elizabeth may have had the
following daughters:
-
Elizabeth Hams
was baptised on 3 May 1719 in Balcombe.
(She did have a cousin
Elizabeth Hames
who was born in 1724.)
Elizabeth married
Alexander Ashdown by licence on 19 April 1750
in Maresfield, Sussex. They were both then said to be of East
Grinstead.
Alexander and Elizabeth had 3 known
children:
-
Alexander Ashdown was baptised on 22 January 1751/2 in East
Grinstead. He married Ann West on 22 April 1773 in East
Grinstead. They had 12 known children.
-
Lydia Ashdown was baptised on 22 January 1753/4 in East
Grinstead.
-
Elizabeth Ashdown was baptised on 14 November 1754 in East
Grinstead.
-
Jane Hame
was baptised on 17 November 1723 in
Balcombe.
-
Ann Hams may have been part of this family. She
married John Constable by banns on 30 August 1745 in
Balcombe. They were both of Balcombe.
-
Mary Hams
was baptised on 25 May 1729 in
Balcombe.
-
Jane Hams
was baptised on 25 May 1729 in
Balcombe.
-
Sarah Hames
was baptised on 23 March 1729/30 in
Balcombe.
-
Susanna Hames
was baptised on 11 March 1731/2 in
Balcombe.
-
Jane Hams
was baptised on 18 March 1692/3 in West
Hoathly. She may have married
John Vinall
on 2 June 1719 in West Hoathly. The
Sussex marriage index records her surname as Hams, whereas a transcript
of the Bishops transcripts says Harris. John may have been
baptised on 18 May 1680 in West Hoathly and have been the son of
John Vennoll and
Susanna Payne.
-
Susannah Hams
was baptised on 17 April 1695 in West
Hoathly. She probably died as a result of childbirth and was buried on 18
September 1734 in Fletching, Sussex. As
Susanna Hames
she married
Nicholas Thorpe on 1 May 1729
in Fletching. (They have their own page.)
-
William Hamms,
my 6x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 9 October 1697 in West Hoathly.
He married
Dorothy sometime before or about
1721. (They have their own page.)
-
The West Hoathly burial register records that [blank] son of [blank] Hams
was buried on 10 January 1701/2. Was this an unbaptised infant?
