and Mary VIDLER (1724-?)

Robert Ham and Mary Vidler may have been my 5x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 12 April 1748 in Basingstoke, Hampshire.  Her name was then spelt as Mary Vidlar.  But, on 19 August 1749 in Stratfield Saye, Hampshire, a Robert Ham married Margaret Keep, and as you will see from the following, I'm in a right muddle!

Robert Ham's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might he have been the son of Robert Ham (1691-?) and Mary Webb who married on 7 July 1716 in Sherfield, Hampshire?

Mary Vidler was born and/or baptised on 15 January 1724/5 in Old Basing, Hampshire.  She was the daughter of Jonathan Vidler (c1690-?) and Elizabeth.

Robert Ham and Mary Vidler had 6 known children:

1. Mary Ham was baptised on 15 October 1749 in Old Basing.  Her mother's name was Mary.  Did she marry Richard Wellman on 25 January 1773 in Old Basing, or Richard Trimmer on 9 November 1775 in Bentworth, Hampshire?

2. Elizabeth Ham was baptised on 15 March 1751/2 in Old Basing.  Her mother's name was Mary.  Did she marry Richard Hill on 28 August 1780 in Old Basing?

3. John Ham was baptised on 12 October 1755 in Old Basing.  His mother's name was Mary.

4. Judith Ham, my 4x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 26 July 1761 in Bramley, Hampshire.  Her mother's name was recorded as Mary.  She married Elisha Webb in 1783.  (They have their own page.)

5. William Ham was baptised on 5 December 1762 in Old Basing.  His mother's name was Mary.  He married Sarah New on 13 February 1786 in Aldermaston, Berkshire.  Sarah was baptised on 13 November 1763 in Aldermaston and was the daughter of Edward New and Mary Applebye.  William and Sarah had 8 known children:

   1. Elisabeth Ham was baptised on 11 June 1786 in Aldermaston.

   2. John Ham was baptised on 18 November 1787 in Aldermaston.

   3. William Ham was baptised on 15 November 1789 in Bramley.

   4. Jesse Ham was baptised on 19 January 1794 in Bramley.  He married Mary Holloway on 1 August 1824 in Bramley.  Might Mary have been baptised on 30 March 1794 in Stratfield Saye, Hampshire, the daughter of William Holloway and Mary Keepe?  Jesse and Mary had 13 known children:

      1. Harriet Ham was baptised on 27 November 1824 in Bramley.

      2. Mary Ham was baptised on 22 October 1826 in Bramley.

      3. James Ham was baptised on 15 October 1827 in Bramley.

      4. Martha Ham was baptised on 15 February 1829 in Bramley.

      5. David Ham was baptised on 17 April 1830 in Bramley.

      6. Sarah Ham was baptised on 23 October 1831 in Bramley.

      7. Anne Ham was baptised on 3 March 1833 in Bramley.

      8. Elizabeth Ham was baptised on 30 November 1834 in Bramley.

      9. Jane Ham was baptised on 2 October 1836 in Bramley.

      10. Judy Ham was baptised on 28 January 1838 in Bramley.

      11. Edmund Ham was baptised on 1 August 1839 in Bramley.

      12. Jesse Ham was baptised on 18 April 1841 in Bramley.

      13. Emma Ham was baptised on 16 October 1842 in Bramley.

   5. Nanny Ham was baptised on 16 November 1800 in Bramley.

   6. James Ham was baptised on 16 May 1802 in Bramley.

   7. Mary Ham was baptised on 19 April 1805 in Bramley.

   8. Ann Ham was baptised on 21 June 1807 in Bramley.

6. Ambrose Ham was baptised on 9 September 1764 in Bramley.  His mother's name was recorded as Mary.  He married Sarah Hutton on 27 August 1786 in Bramley.  They had 9 known children:

   1. William Ham was baptised on 27 August 1786 in Bramley.

   2. Dinah Ham was baptised on 23 December 1787 in Bramley.  She married James Gosling on 26 September 1814 in Bramley.  He was baptised on 21 March 1784 in Bramley and was the son of John Gosling and Anne White.

   3. Ambrose Ham was baptised on 18 November 1789 in Bramley.

   4. Joel Ham was baptised in February 1793 in Bramley.

   5. Fanny Ham was baptised in December 1796 in Bramley.

   6. Ambrose Ham was baptised on 15 October 1797 in Bramley.

   7. Judith Ham was baptised on 10 March 1799 in Bramley.  She married James Nation on 31 July 1825 in Bramley.  They have 3 known children:

      1. Sarah Nation was baptised on 30 October 1825 in Bramley.

      2. William Nation was baptised on 1 April 1827 in Bramley.

      3. Ann Nation was baptised on 3 April 1831 in Bramley.

   8. Mary Ham was baptised on 14 July 1801 in Bramley.

   9. Lydia Ham was baptised on 3 April 1804 in Bramley.

Margaret Keep was baptised on 31 May 1726 in Stratfield Saye.  She was the daughter of William Keep and Margaret Thayre or Thayce or Thorpe.  (As noted above, Mary Holloway may have been born in Stratfield Saye in 1794 and have been the daughter of William Holloway and Mary Keepe.  Might there have been a connection between the 2 Keep(e) girls - Aunt and Niece perhaps?

Robert Ham and Margaret Keep had 3 known children:

1. Margaret Ham was baptised on 23 December 1750 in Sherfield upon Lodden in Hamphire.  Her mother's name was Margaret.

2. Robert Ham was baptised on 10 November 1754 in Bramley.  His mother's name was then recorded as Margaret.

3. Ambrose Ham was baptised on 15 July 1759 in Bramley.  His mother's name was recorded as Margaret.

I'm certain that I have a 4x Great Grandmother named Judith Ham, and her baptism in 1761 fits.  But, all her siblings were baptised in Old Basing, whereas she was baptised in Bramley, which is where Robert and Margaret's children were baptised.  So, was her mother Mary Vidler or Margaret Keep?  Judith named a daughter Mary, but not Margaret.  And to confuse further, Judith seems to have had a brother William who married in Aldermaston, which is close to Beenham where Judith settled, and then William settled in Bramley.

Who was the Mary Ham who married John Keep on 30 October 1808 in Monk Sherborne?  (See Keep Family Genealgoy Forum)  The message in the forum by Derek Iremonger goes on to say that John may have been baptised in Stratfield Saye in either, 1778 to Joshua Keep (1754-?) and Ann Gosling or in 1783 to William Keep and Lydia Saunders.  Might Mary have been baptised on 7 April 1782 in Stratfield Saye and have been the daughter of William Ham and Ruth Mason who had married on 24 April 1775 in Bramley?  If so, then when and where was William born, and how might he link to the above Ham family(ies)?
