Thomas GUMBRELL (1784-1858)

and Mary RUFF (c1787-1853)

 

Thomas Gumbrell and Mary Ruff married by licence on 16 January 1805 in Goring, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she was from Sutton, Surrey.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Gumbrell was baptised on 25 January 1784 in Arundel, Sussex.  He was the son of George Gumbrell (c1750-1828) and Sarah Holder (c1753-1795).  Thomas died aged 74 years and was buried on 3 April 1858 in Arundel.

Mary Ruff's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 66 years and was buried on 30 September 1853 in Arundel, therefore, she was born about 1787.

 

Thomas Gumbrell and Mary Ruff had 3 known children:

  1. James Gumbrell was baptised on 6 December 1807 in Arundel.

  2. Eliza Gumbril was baptised on 27 July 1817 in Arundel.

    Eliza may have had the following children:

    1. Henry Gumbril was baptised on 16 October 1836 in Arundel and buried there aged 7 years on 8 April 1844.

    2. James Fibbens Gumbril was baptised on 7 April 1839 in Arundel.

    Eliza married George Fibbans on 26 September 1840 in Arundel.  He was a 24 year old bachelor and fisherman and she was a 23 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Charles Fibbans a fisherman and Thomas Gumbrell a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Smith and Catherine Smith.

    George was born about 1811.  He died aged 51 years and was buried on 28 February 1862 in Arundel, as George Fibbons.

    George and Eliza had the following children:

    1. Fanny Fibbans was baptised on 8 April 1841 in Arundel.

      Fanny married Henry Swain by banns on 1 May 1864 in Arundel.  He was a 31 year old bachelor and labourer and she was a 23 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as William Swain a fisherman and George Fibbins a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Verion and Mary Verion.

    2. George Fibbans was baptised on 14 April 1843 in Arundel.

    3. Eliza Fibbins was baptised on 20 July 1845 in Arundel.

      Eliza married Charles Smythe by banns on 28 August 1864 in Arundel.  He was a 24 year old bachelor and painter and she was a 19 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Henry Charles Smythe a carver and George Fibbins a fisherman.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Stone and Ellen Stone.

    4. Elizabeth Fibbins was baptised on 29 July 1849 in Arundel.

    5. Mary Fibbins was baptised on 23 March 1852 in Arundel.

    6. Charles Fibbons was baptised on 27 August 1854 in Arundel.

    7. William Fibbins was born about 1857 in Arundel.

    8. Maria Fibbins was baptised on 28 August 1859 in Arundel and buried there aged 2 years on 9 January 1862.

  3. William Gumbril was baptised on 24 February 1820 in Arundel.

    William married Elizabeth Slaughter on 18 February 1841 in Arundel.  He was a 21 year old bachelor and carter and she was a 24 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Gumbrell a carter and William Slaughter deceased.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Slaughter and Catherine Slaughter.

    Elizabeth died aged 26 years and was buried on 3 January 1843 in Arundel, therefore, born about 1816/7.

    William and Elizabeth had the following child:

    1. Mary Ann Gumbril was baptised on 8 April 1842 in Arundel.

    William also married Maria Searle on 21 February 1846 in Arundel.  He was a widower and labourer and she was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Gumbrill a labourer and Charles Searle a butcher.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Ball and Kitty Ratley.

    Maria died aged 37 years and was buried on 17 October 1858 in Arundel, therefore, born about 1821.

    William and Maria had the following children:

    1. Henry Gumbril was baptised on 31 October 1847 in Arundel.  He died aged 22 years and was buried on 27 December 1869 in Arundel.

    2. Ellen Gumbrill was baptised on 25 November 1849 in Arundel.

    3. David Gumbrill was baptised on 29 August 1852 in Arundel.

    4. William Gumbrill was baptised on 29 April 1855 in Arundel and buried there as an infant on 30 June 1855.

    5. James Gumbrill was baptised on 28 December 1856 in Arundel.
