Thomas GRUMBRELL (1781-1832)

and Catherine DALE (c1776-1849)

 

Thomas Gumbrell and Catherine Dale married by banns on 23 November 1802 in Coombes.  She was from Botolphs.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Gates and Thomas Dale.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Thomas Grumbrel was baptised on 1 April 1781 in Poynings, Sussex.  He was the son of John Gumberel (1740-1811) and Susannah Izemonger (1744-1786).  Thomas died aged 52 years and was buried on 18 September 1832 in Coombes.

Catherine Dale was born about 1776.  She died aged 73 years and was buried on 28 October 1849 in Coombes.

Thomas's head stone read:

"Thomas Gumbrell who lost his life by the accidental discharge of a gun Sept 16 1832 aged 52 years.  He had lived in the service of Mr Gell of Applesham more than 30 years of who .... esteemed and .... as a tribute of his respect to his memory they have erected this stone"

 

Thomas Grumbrell and Catherine Dale had 8 or 9 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Gumbrill was baptised on 28 August 1803 in Coombes.

  2. Catherine Gumbrill was baptised on 19 January 1806 in Coombes.  Might she have married Robert King by banns on 15 July 1833 in Arundel, Sussex?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were John King and Anne Martin.

  3. Thomas Gumbrill was baptised on 14 February 1808 in Coombes.  He died aged 61 years and was buried on 10 June 1869 in Coombes.

    Thomas married Martha.

    Martha was born about 1803.  She died aged 45 years and was buried on 20 February 1848 in Coombes.

    Thomas and Martha had the following children:

    1. George Gumbrel was baptised on 28 August 1831 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.  He died aged 17 years and was buried on 1 September 1848 in Coombes.

    2. William Thomas Gumbrell was baptised on 21 September 1834 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

    3. Elizabeth Gumbrell was baptised on 30 October 1836 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  She died aged 16 years and was buried on 28 July 1853 in Coombes.

    4. Thomas William Gumbrel was baptised on 6 January 1839 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

    5. Rosina Gumbrel was born on 29 June 1841 and baptised on 22 August 1841 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

      Rosina had the following child:

      1. George Wheatley Gumbrel was baptised on 30 August 1863 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his mother was a domestic servant.

    6. Isabella Gumbrell was baptised on 14 January 1844 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

      Isabella married Henry Thomas by banns on 10 March 1866 in Coombes.  He was a bachelor and sawyer, whilst she was a spinster and servant.  Their fathers were named as Edward Thomas a sawyer and Thomas Gumbrell a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Gumbrell and Charlotte Barnes.

    Thomas next married Naomi Juniper by banns on 2 December 1849.  The transcript of the marriage register noted that Thomas was a bachelor and labourer.  Naomi was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Gumbrell and James Juniper who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Wadey and Sarah Ann Blunden.

    Naomi was born about 1819.  She died age 45 years and was buried on 4 September 1864 in Coombes.

  4. Mary Gumbrill was baptised on 7 April 1811 in Coombes.

  5. Jane Gumbrill was baptised on 11 September 1814 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.

  6. John Gumbrill was baptised on 17 August 1817 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.  He died aged 6 months and was buried on 28 January 1818 in Coombes.

  7. Harriet Gumbrill was baptised on 25 February 1820 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that her father was a labourer.  She died aged 6 days and was buried on 5 March 1820 in Coombes.

  8. James Gumbril may have been part of this family.  He died aged 2 years and was buried on 21 September 1823 in Coombes.

  9. Samuel Gumbrill was baptised in July 1825 in Coombes.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.

    Samuel married Ann Lloyd by banns on 1 April 1849 in Coombes.  He was then a bachelor and labourer and she was a spinster from Horsham.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Gumbrell and William Lloyd who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas ? and Elizabeth Boulton.

    Samuel and Ann had the following child:

    1. William Thomas Gumbrel was baptised on 10 March 1850 in Horsham.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer from Coombes.
