Samuel GUMBRELL (1779-1855)

and Zilpha GREENFIELD (c1779-1825)

 

Samuel Gumbrell and Zilpha Greenfield married by banns on 20 November 1804 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  Samuel married again to Eleanor Hollingdale by banns on 2 December 1826 in Brighton, Sussex.  He was then described as a widower of Poynings and she a spinster of Brighton.  As widower, Samuel Gumbrill married again to Mary Cuttress by licence on 27 October 1834 in Edburton, Sussex.  He was the of Poynings and she was a widow of Edburton.  The witnesses to their marriage were Susan Storeleb and George Barber.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Samuel Grumbrel was baptised on 11 April 1779 in Poynings, Sussex.  He was the son of John Gumberel (1740-1811) and Susannah Izemonger (1744-1786).  He died aged 76 years and was buried on 1 April 1855 in Poynings.  The burial register noted that he was a churchwarden.  He left a will (I haven't seen the document).

Zilpha Greenfield was born about 1779.  She died aged 46 years and was buried on 16 January 1825 in Poynings.

Eleanor Hollingdale was born about 1773/4.  She died aged 55 years (as per the burial register) and was buried on 22 June 1828 in Poynings.

Mary was born about 1791/2.  She died aged 85 years (as per the burial register) in Brighton and was buried on 12 February 1877 in Poynings.

A transcript of their headstones reads: 

"Sacred to the memory of Samuel Gumbrell who died March 26th, 1855, aged 76 years.  Also of Zilpha wife of the above who died Janry 12th 1825, aged 46 years.  Also of Eleanor who died June 28th 1828, aged 54 years.  Also Mary, daughter of the above, who died April 8th 1826, aged 17 years.  Also of William, son of the above, who died April 15th 1829, aged 15 years.  The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."

"In memory of Mary wife of Samuel Gumbrell who died Feb. 6th 1877 in her 86th year.  Her end was peace."

 

Samuel Gumbrell and Zilpha Greenfield had 8 known children:

  1. Thomas Gumbrell was baptised on 22 July 1805 in Poynings.  He married Sarah Simmons in 1834.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Elizabeth Gumbrell was baptised on 22 July 1805 in Poynings and buried there on 25 August 1805.

  3. Sarah Gumbrill was born on 11 September 1807 and baptised on 18 October 1807 in Poynings.

  4. Martha Gumbrill was born and privately baptised on 14 June 1809.  She was received into the church on 23 July 1809.

    Martha married Charles Barber by banns on 19 July 1828 in Poynings.

  5. Mary Gumbrill was born and privately baptised on 14 June 1809.  She was received into the church on 23 July 1809.  Mary died aged 16 years and was buried on 13 April 1826 in Poynings.

  6. Samuel Gumbrell was baptised on 12 May 1811 in Poynings.  The baptism register noted that his father was a shoemaker.  He died aged 78 years and was buried on 28 March 1890 in Poynings.

    Samuel married Jemima Payne by banns on 4 June 1831 in Edburton.  The witnesses to their marriage were Robert Barber and Susan Hollingdale.

    Jemima was baptised on 4 September 1808 in Edburton and was the daughter of John Payne and Jemima Fowler.  She died aged 68 years and was buried on 4 August 1876 in Poynings.

    Samuel and Jemima had the following child:

    1. John George Gumbrel was born on 21 September 1843 and baptised on 29 October 1843.  The baptism register noted that his father was a carpenter.

  7. William Gumbril was born on 19 October 1814 and baptised on 20 November 1814 in Poynings.  The baptism register noted that his father was a shoemaker.  He died aged 14 years and was buried on 19 April 1829 in Poynings.

  8. Hannah Gumbril was born on 27 May 1818 and baptised on 28 June 1818 in Poynings.  The baptism register noted her father was a shoemaker.

    Hannah had the following child by Henry Simmons:

    1. Henry Gumbril was baptised on 11 October 1840 in Poynings.
