John GRUMBRELL (1740-1811)

and Susannah IZEMONGER (1744-1786)

John Gumberel and Susannah Izemonger married on 23 November 1767 in Ockley, Surrey.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Gumbrell was baptised on 23 November 1740 in the St. Michael's parish of Lewes, Sussex.  He was the son of John Gumbrell and Mary Evershead.  John died aged 71 years and was buried on 24 February 1811 in Poynings, Sussex.  The burial register noted that he was a "half witted pauper".  John Gumbrell aged 13 years was apprenticed to James Burnett, cordwainer of Poynings on 25 May 1752.  John was then of the parish of St. Michael's in Lewes.

Susannah Isemonger was baptised on 10 June 1744 in Ockley, Surrey.  She was the daughter of Samuel Isemnoger and Sarah.  Her name was recorded as Susan against the baptisms of her children.  She was buried as Susannah Gumbrell on 19 May 1786 in Poynings.

John Grumbrell and Susannah Izemonger had 8 or 9 known children:

  1. John Grumbell may have been born before his parents marriage.  A database at gives that he was born on 21 May 1767 in Poynings, although there is no baptism for him in the Poynings registers.

  2. Peter Grumbrel was baptised on 21 May 1769 in Poynings and buried there on 25 December 1770.

  3. Sarah Grumbrel was baptised on 25 December 1770 in Poynings.

As Sarah Gumbril she married John Barber by banns on 30 November 1789 in Poynings.

  4. Mary Grumbrel was baptised on 14 February 1773 in Poynings.  She was buried on 11 April 1779 in Poynings.  The burial register recorded she was Mary Martin Grumbrel, daughter of John.

  5. James Grumbrel was baptised on 12 March 1775 in Poynings.

  6. Elizabeth Grumbril was baptised on 2 February 1777 in Poynings.

  7. Samuel Grumbrel was baptised on 11 April 1779 in Poynings.  He married Zilpha Greenfield in 1804.  (They have their own page.)

  8. Thomas Grumbrel was baptised on 1 April 1781 in Poynings.  He married Catherine Dale in 1802.  (They have their own page.)

  9. William Grumbrel was baptised on 15 June 1783 in Poynings.
