William GUILE (c1798-?)

and Jane MITCHELL (1800-?)

William Guile and Jane Mitchell may have married in about 1825.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Giale was baptised on 25 November 1798 in Poling, Sussex.  He was the son of Samuel Guile (1765-1836) and Elizabeth Moody (1774-1856).

Jane Mitchell may have been baptised on 1 June 1800 in Broadwater and have been the daughter of James Mitchell and Mary Snook.  They had married on 5 October 1793 in Broadwater, at which time he was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Broadwater.

A removal order was issued by the overseers of Broadwater parish on 16 November 1826, returning William, his wife Jane and their 7 month old daughter to Heene (or vice versa).

When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Heene and William was a brewer.  In 1851 William was a foreman and the family were still living in Heene.  Jane was then 49 years old and gave her place of birth as Broadwater.

William Guile and Jane Mitchell had 11 known children:

  1. Mary Ann Guile was born about 1825 in Broadwater.  In 1841 she was a 15 year old servant in the home of Henry Methold at Marine Parade in Worthing.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was visiting her parents and she was then Mary Ann Arnold a 26 year old married woman.

  2. Jane Elizabeth Guile was baptised on 23 April 1826 Broadwater, at which time her father was a labourer.  She was 15 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

Jane married Richard Sawyer on 15 April 1850 at the parish church of St. Mary's in Broadwater.  Richard and Jane had 5 children.

  3. Henry Guile was born on 22 March 1828 and baptised on 15 June 1828 in Broadwater, at which time his father was a labourer.  In 1841 he was 13 years old.  He was an unmarried 22 year old sailor in 1851 and living with his parents.

Henry married Alice Gibson on 10 October 1854.

  4. William Giles was baptised on 1 August 1830 in Heene, at which time his father was a labourer.  He was 10 years old in 1841.

William married Fanny Newman on 30 July 1855 at St. Mary's in Broadwater.
