Walter GEALE (1602-1654)

and Elizabeth PECKHAM (1594-1648)

and Margaret (?-1680)

Walter Geale and Elizabeth Peckham married by licence on 27 February 1624/5 in Newtimber, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 26 February 1624/5.  It recorded that Walter was a husbandman of Findon whilst Elizabeth was a spinster of Newtimber.  The sponsors of the licence were Walter himself and William Peckham a husbandman of Newtimber and father of Elizabeth.  Might Walter have previously married Mary Hill in December 1623 in Shipley, Sussex?  Walter then married again sometime between 1648 and 1651, possibly to Margaret.

Water Geale was baptised on 28 June 1602 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register recorded that his father was John Geale the elder.  Walter was buried on 24 March 1653/4 in Findon.

Elizabeth Pickham was baptised in September 1594 in Newtimber.  She was the daughter of William Pickham.  Elizabeth was buried on 27 November 1648 in Findon.

The 1662 Hearth Tax Assessment records that a Margaret Gille, widow of Findon had 1 fireplace.  A widow Geale was buried in Patching in 1680.

Walter Geale and Elizabeth Peckham had 5 known children:

  1. Walter Geale was baptised on 29 January 1625/6 in Findon.  He married Tamsin Salter in 1650.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Abraham Geale was baptised on 10 August 1628 in Findon.

  3. Elsabeth Geale was baptised on 21 March 1629/30 in Findon.  She may have married Edward Short on 13 May 1658 in Findon.

  4. Margaret Geale was baptised on 11 May 1634 in Findon.

  5. Anne Geele was baptised on 1 February 1637/8 in Findon.

Walter Geale and (?Margaret?) had 1 known son:

  1. John Geale was baptised on 20 June 1651 in Findon and it was noted that he was the son of Walter Geale, the elder.  For some unknown reason he seems to have changed his name to John Guile (and variations of that surname).  John and married Elizabeth sometime before or about 1700.  (They have their own page.)
