John GUILE (1701-1749)

and Margaret FORD (1707-1761)

John Guile and Margaret Ford married on 6 May 1729 in Poling, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Guile was baptised on 12 April 1701 in Patching, Sussex.  He was the son of John Guile (1651-1714) and Elizabeth (?-1731).  He was buried on 6 August 1749 in Poling.

Margaret Ford was baptised on 21 May 1707 in Littlehampton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Ford and Sarah.  She was buried on 26 November 1761 in Poling.

  2. John Guile was baptised on 5 October 1732 in Poling.

John married Judith Keene by banns on 21 November 1756 in Lyminster, Sussex.  He was then said to be of Patching and Judith of Lyminster.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Pocock and William Keene.

John and Judith had the following children:

    1. John Guile was baptised on 31 July 1757 in Lyminster.

      2. Elizabeth Guile was baptised on 20 March 1785 in Lyminster.

As a widower John married Phoebe Etherington, widow, by banns on 22 September 1802 in Lyminster.  They were both of Lyminster.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Alcock and Mary Alcock.

John and Phoebe had the following child:

      1. Jane Guile was baptised on 16 January 1805 in Lyminster.  Jane married William Boxall by banns on 25 July 1825 in Lyminster.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Lyminster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Duke Faulkner and David Boxall.

  4. Jude Guile was baptised on 31 August 1738 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was buried on 22 April 1784 in Billingshurst as Judith Guile.  On 15 January 1749 she was apprenticed to Alas? Lander in Billinghurst.  A removal order was issued by the overseers of Lyminster on 20 April 1762, returning Jude to Billingshurst.

Jude, or Judith, had 6 illegitimate children:

    1. Ann Guile was baptised on 2 July 1762 in Billingshurst and buried there on 4 September 1762.

    2. Samuel Guile was baptised on 27 January 1765 in Billingshurst.  He married Elizabeth Moody in 1797.  (They have their own page.)

    3. Elizabeth Guile was baptised on 8 February 1771 in Billingshurst.  She may have married Reuben Robinson by banns on 26 April 1789 in Billingshurst.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Champion and Foice Champion.

    4. Frances Guile was baptised on 9 July 1775 in Billingshurst.

    5. Martha Guile was baptised on 22 October 1777 in Billingshurst.  On 18 December 1802, the overseers of Pulborough issued a removal order, returning Martha to Billingshurst.  On the same day the overseers of Billingshurst issued a warrent naming James Luxford as the putative father of Martha's unborn child.  The Billingshurst overseers then issued a bastardy order/bond on 5 October 1805 in which John Smith was named as the putative father of a male child born on 5 August 1805.

Martha had 3 or 4 illegitimate sons:

      1. Levi Wadey Guile was baptised on 28 October 1798 in Billingshurst.  (A Levi Weady Guile was baptised on 23 February 1800 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that he was baseborn, but his mother's name was not recorded.)  (A Levi Wady was baptised on 2 May 1779 in Billingshurst, the son of Levi Wady and Mary Reynolds.)

      2. James Guile was baptised on 3 April 1803 in Billingshurst.

      3. William Guile was baptised on 18 August 1805 in Billingshurst.  He died aged 71 years in the Union Workhouse and was buried on 22 March 1877 in Billingshurst.

William married Diana Greenfield by banns on 19 April 1828 in Findon, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Findon.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Greenfield and Martha Greenfield.

Diana died aged 63 years and was buried on 3 November 1863 in Billingshurst.

  5. Richard Guiler was baptised on 17 July 1741 in Billingshurst.  He may have been buried on 4 May 1804 in Poling.  On 8 March he was apprenticed to Samuel Older in Billingshurst.

As Richard Guile did he marry Susanna Mott by banns on 29 May 1770 in Brighton, Sussex?  Susanna would seem to have died aged 61 years and have been buried on 5 April 1798 in Arundel, therefore, born about 1737.

Or did he marry Mary Snow by banns on 29 October 1785 in Poling.  They were both then of Poling.

Mary was buried on 26 July 1812 in Poling.
