John GEIL (c1550-1604)

and unknown (?-?)

and Ann (?-1614)

John Geale may have been my 12x Great Grandfather.  He was of Cuckfield, Sussex.  I am speculating that he married twice, and that his second wife was named Ann.  My thinking behind this is that if John was the father of the John who married in 1599, then John junior must have been born in the 1570's, and then if John senior was also the father of the children baptised in Cuckfield in 1598, 1600 and 1602, then his first wife would probably have been to old to have been their mother.

John Geale's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  The Cuckfield burial register records that "old" John Geale was buried on 4 December 1604.  Might he have been the son or grandson of John Geale a husbandman of Cuckfield who left a will dated 18 October 1557?

Ann Geale widow of Brookhouse was buried on 5 May 1614 in Cuckfield.  As will be seen below, Thomas son of John Geale of Brookhouse was baptised in 1598.

John Geil and wife or wives may have had the following children:

  1. John Geale may have been born in the 1570's.  He married Mercy Lonewell in 1599.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomazen Geale married Thomas Bristoe on 2 October 1614 in Cuckfield.

  3. Edmund Geale may have been born in or before the 1590's.  He was buried on 25 April 1640 in Cuckfield.  (An Edmund Geale had a son baptised in Wivelsfield in 1574.)

  4. Edmund may have married Joan before 1615.  (Searching the Sussex marriage index, the only Edmund and Joan marriages were of Edmund Dudlie and Joan Drewat on 28 November 1613 and of Edmund Ilman and Joan Homer on 21 November 1614 in Cuckfield.)

Joan, wife of Edmund Geale was buried on 7 April 1638 in Cuckfield.

    They had the following children:

    1. Edmond Geale was baptised on 14 January 1615/6 in Cuckfield.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    2. Henry Geale was baptised on 5 July 1618 in Cuckfield and buried there on 21 April 1639.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism and burial registers.

    3. Benedick Geale was baptised on 14 January 1620/1 in Cuckfield.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    4. Thomas Geale was baptised on 20 July 1623 in Cuckfield.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    5. Mary Geale was baptised on 3 June 1627 in Cuckfield.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    6. John Geale was baptised on 14 October 1632 in Cuckfield and buried there on 21 October 1632.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism and burial registers.

  5. Abraham Geale may have been born in the 1590's.

    Abraham married Elizabeth before 1617.

    They had the following children:

    1. John Geale was baptised on 6 July 1617 in Cuckfield.  Both his parents were named in the baptism register.

    2. Elizabeth Geele was baptised on 24 October 1619 in Cuckfield.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  An Elizabeth Geale was buried on 19 July 1621 in Cuckfield, but no further details were recorded in the burial register.

    3. Abraham Geale was baptised on 10 February 1621/2 in Cuckfield.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    4. Abraham Geale was baptised on 25 February 1626 in Findon, Sussex.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

    5. Mary Geale was baptised on 7 April 1629 in Findon.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  6. Thomas Geale was baptised on 26 November 1598 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register recorded that his father was John Geale of Brookhouse.

  7. An Jeill was baptised on 2 March 1599/1600 in Cuckfield.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  Ann may have married George Muggredg on 14 April 1626 in Cuckfield.

  8. Water Geale was baptised on 28 June 1602 in Cuckfield.  The baptism register recorded that his father was John Geale the elder.  Walter married Elizabeth Peckham in 1625.  (They have their own page.)  (The couple settled in Findon and named a son Abraham, which makes me think Walter was the younger brother of Abraham as mentioned above.  If so, then it would seem unlikely that Walter was the son of John and Mercy who married in 1599.)

Might the following be connected to the above in any way:

William Geale was baptised on 19 November 1566 in Wivelsfield.  Neither of his parents were named in the baptism register.

Thomas Geele was baptised on 10 April 1574 in Wivelsfield, the son of Edmund Geele.

Eleanor Geale married John Tricker on 20 May 1588 in Lindfield.

Rose Geele married Thomas Richards on 23 February 1589/90 in Wivelsfield.

John Geele married Margaret Scrace on 8 July 1593 in Wivelsfield.  (I'm not sure if they raised a family in Wivelsfield, or whether there is a chance they were the parents of some of the above children?  1602 Walter named a daughter Margaret, but he also named another daughter Ann.)

Edmund Geale of Wivelsfield left a will dated 3 November 1593 and proved at Lewes on 16 February 1593/4 (ref. 241-188).  (Given that there was an Edmund in Cuckfield from 1615 until his death in 1640, might the younger Edmund have been related to the elder Edmund?)

Richard Geale of Cuckfield left a will dated 15 November 1595.

Thomas Geele was baptised on 1 January 1597 in Wivelsfield, the son of Garrad Geele.

Ameye Geale was baptised on 17 February 1599 in Wivelsfield, the daughter of Jarret Geale.

Richard Geill was buried on 24 September 1599 in Cuckfield.

Joan Geall was baptised on 22 November 1601 in Wivelsfield, the daughter of John Geall.

Anne Geale was baptised on 23 March 1603 in Wivelsfield, the daughter of Gerard Geale.

John Geale was baptised on 23 March 1605 in Wivelsfield, the son of John Geale.

Gerard Geale of Wivelsfield left a will dated 24 July 1605.

Thomas Geale married Elizabeth Tuffin on 16 February 1606/7 in Lindfield.

John Geale was baptised on 9 August 1607 in Wivelsfield, the son of Thomas Geale.

Thomas Geale married Joan Garson on 8 August 1614 in Wivelsfield.  They were both then of Cuckfield.
