My Geale Ancestors
A 9x Great Grandmother was
Sarah
Geale who married
William
Reeve in 1659 in Cuckfield, Sussex. She had been born in
Cuckfield in 1637 and was the daughter of
John Geale and
Sarah
Brocket.
A relative of Sarah's was
John Geale, born in Findon in 1651 and he became
John Guile, who was the ancestor of my aunt by marriage,
Violet
Gathern. (Violet married my mum's brother.) John's
grandfather was also Sarah's great grandfather.
I am very grateful
to Di Oxford for passing on details about the Guile families in
Sussex. She and I are also grateful to other Guile researchers who
have unwittingly passed their research onto me for inclusion in this web
site - thank you everyone; corrections and additions would be gratefully
received. This is what Di was told....
"Many years ago
my grandfather told my brother that in the past two Guile brothers had a
disagreement and as a result of this one of the brothers changed the
spelling of his name from Guile to Guiel. At the time my brother
thought no more of it but a few years ago he was working on a project in
London with a girl and when he asked her surname she advised it was Guiel
as opposed to ours Guile. Spookily enough she had heard the same
story told through her family! My brother asked me if I could find a
link between us. Eventually and with help I managed to put the
pieces together and established that she was a 5th cousin once removed!
Since then any searching has been on both (plus more) spellings as the
spelling changes back and forth even in the same generation!"
In June 2008,
Derek Guile, kindly contacted me with lots more information
going back to a John Geale
born about 1574 in Cuckfield, Sussex. Derek worked out that Geale
became Guile.
