Richard GROVES (1742-1784)

and Ann LILLIOT (1739-1824)

Richard Groves and Ann Lilliot married on 1 April 1766 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Lilliot and John Evens.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ann was the niece of my 6x great grandfather.)

Richard Groves may have been baptised on 20 June 1742 in Albourne, Sussex, the son of Richard Groves (?-1767) and Ann Marten.  He may have been buried as a pauper on 5 September 1784 in Woodmancote.

Ann Lilliot was born on 1 March 1738/9 and baptised on 16 March 1738/9 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Lilliot (1688-?) and Mary Hoad.  She died aged 85 years and was buried on 13 November 1824 in Woodmancote.

Ann had an illegitimate son:

  1. Matthew Lelliott was privately baptised as he was in peril of death on 18 March 1762 in Ashurst, Sussex.

Matthew married Mary Charlecroft on 14 July 1785 in Wiggonholt.  On 17 September 1785 a Removal Order was issued by Wiggonholt to Washington (or vice versa) for Mathew Lelliott and wife Sarah.

Matthew and Mary had 1 known son:

    1. Matthew Lelliott was baptised on 1 January 1797 in Ashurst.

Richard Groves and Ann Lilliott had 6 known children:

  1. Ann Groves was baptised on 26 October 1766 in Woodmancote and buried there as an infant on 29 March 1767.

  2. Mary Groves was baptised on 18 December 1768 in Woodmancote.

Mary married William King on 27 June 1794 in Woodmancote.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Stile and Mary Stile.

William may have been baptised on 5 April 1761 in Albourne, Sussex and have been the son of William King and Martha Winter.

William and Mary had 8 known children:

    1. Mary King was baptised on 8 February 1795 in Albourne.  She may have married William Richardson by banns on 9 December 1821 in Albourne.  At the time she was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Albourne.

    2. William King was baptised on 19 February 1797 in Albourne.

    3. Martha King was baptised on 17 February 1799 in Albourne.  She may have married James Brown by banns on 31 July 1819 in Pyecombe.  They were both then of Pyecombe.

    4. Thomas King was baptised on 13 September 1801 in Albourne.  He may have married Jane Hills by banns on 22 November 1824 in Woodmancote.  He was then a bachelor of Albourne and she a spinster of Woodmancote.

    5. James King was baptised on 1 December 1803 in Albourne.  He may have married Hannah Miles by banns on 7 April 1829 in Woodmancote.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Woodmancote.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Bennett and Louisa Wickham.

    6. John King was baptised on 24 August 1806 in Albourne.  He may have married twice, firstly to Sarah Perkins by banns on 22 December 1828 and/or to Louisa Wickham by banns on 12 July 1829.  Both marriages took place in Albourne and at both times the couples were of Albourne.

    7. Robert King was baptised on 13 November 1808 in Albourne.

    8. Henry King was baptised on 2 August 1812 in Albourne.

  3. Henry Groves was baptised on 17 April 1770 in Woodmancote.  He married Sarah Botten in 1793.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Richard Groves was baptised on 30 October 1774 in Woodmancote.

Richard married Mary Fowler on 2 August 1795 in Upper Beeding, Sussex.  At the time he was of Steyning.

Richard and Mary had 8 known children:

    1. Mary Groves was baptised on 24 January 1796 in Steyning.  She may have married Thomas Mercer on 6 April 1816 in Steyning.

    2. Ann Groves was baptised on 8 July 1798 in Steyning.  She may have died aged 21 years and have been buried on 7 February 1819 in Steyning.

    3. Kitty Groves was baptised on 9 November 1800 in Steyning.  As Catherine Groves she may have married John Coles on 9 May 1820 in Henfield.  He was baptised on 29 November 1797 in Newtimber and was the son of George Coles (1764-1815) and Sarah Lilliot (1777-1822).

    4. Richard Groves was baptised on 6 June 1802 in Steyning.  He married Lucy Bacon on 6 March 1831 in Steyning.

    5. Betty Groves was baptised on 1 July 1804 in Steyning.

    6. Isaac Groves was baptised on 15 June 1806 in Steyning.  He married Hannah Hope on 12 September 1836 in Steyning.

    7. James Groves was baptised on 12 June 1808 in Steyning.  He married Mary Payne on 7 July 1833 in Steyning.

    8. Sarah Groves was baptised on 19 August 1810 in Steyning.

  5. James Groves was baptised on 26 April 1778 in Woodmancote.

Might his name have been incorrectly recorded in the baptism register?  Could he have been the John Groves who married Charlotte Wickens on 27 July 1801 in Westerham, Kent?  At that time he was said to be of West Malling, but in the 1851 and 1861 census he gave his place of birth as Woodmancote (aged 72 and 83, respectively).

John may have died in 1864.  No John Groves was baptised in Woodmancote (or at least not recorded in the register) between 1775 and 1785.  Might it also be possible that 1778 John was baptised in a nearby parish, and possibly to a single mother?

John and Charlotte had 12 known children:

    1. Mary Groves was baptised on 17 January 1802 in Leybourne, Kent.

    2. Samuel Groves was born on 4 February 1803 and baptised on 8 May 1803 in West Malling.  He died aged 39 years on 24 February 1842 in Ryarsh, Kent.  His cause of death was obstruction in the bowls and Anne Wells who was present at his death was the informant named on his death certificate.  Samuel married Elizabeth Fremlin on 29 June 1823 in Ryarsh.

    3. James Groves was born about 1804 in Leybourne.

    4. Charlotte Groves was baptised on 30 December 1804 in Leybourne.

    5. George Groves was baptised on 20 November 1806 in Leybourne.  He died after 1881.

    6. Catherine Groves was baptised on 24 February 1811 in Leybourne.  She died between 1861 and 1871.

    7. William Groves was baptised on 1 January 1813 in Leybourne.

    8. Sarah Groves was baptised on 19 March 1815 in Leybourne.

    9. Matthew Groves was baptised on 1 July 1817 in Leybourne.  He died aged 64 years in 1881.

    10. Ann Groves was baptised on 7 October 1819 in Leybourne.

    11. John Groves was baptised on 2 December 1821 in Leybourne.

    12. Anne Groves was baptised on 7 December 1823 in Leybourne.

  6. Catherine Groves was baptised on 23 September 1781 in Woodmancote.

Catherine may have married Richard Goddard on 18 September 1806 in Sullington, Sussex.  If so then they had 2 known children:

    1. Ann Goddard was baptised on 27 September 1807 in Steyning.  She may have married William Drewett on 13 March 1831 in Steyning.

    2. Elizabeth Goddard was baptised on 13 August 1809 in Steyning.

Richard may have been baptised on 22 December 1774 in Steyning and have been the son of Richard Goddard and Elizabeth.
