William GREAGSBEY (1744-?)

and Sarah WAKELIN (?-?)

William Greagsbey and Sarah Wakelin married by licence on 26 October 1761 at St. Giles in the Field, Middlesex.  William was then of Lamberhurst and Sarah of the parish of St. Giles.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  William was possibly the nephew of my 6x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Greagsby.)

William Greagsby may have been baptised on 9 August 1744 in Lamberhurst, Kent, and have been the son of William Grigsby (1718-1783) and Mary Austin (c1718-1759).

Sarah Wakelin's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  As Sarah Greagsby she may have been buried on 20 July 1788 in Lamberhurst, or the burial may have been that of her daughter.

William Greagsbey and Sarah Wakelin had 4 known children:

  1. Joseph Greagsby was baptised on 31 August 1763 in Lamberhurst.  He died in 1797.

  2. James Greagsby was baptised on 29 September 1765 in Lamberhurst.  (NOTE:  there is some doubt as to whether he was the son of William born in 1718 or his son William born in 1744.)

James married twice, firstly to Mary.  This may have been to Mary Read on 27 December 1787 at Brenchley, Kent, the witnesses being John Collins and Jane Saunders.

James and Mary had 2 known children:

    1. Sarah Greagsby was baptised on 9 April 1788 in Horsemondon, Kent.

    2. Abigail Greagsbey was baptised on 24 January 1796 in Lamberhurst.  She married Joseph Martin by banns on 2 November 1812 in Rotherfield.  They were both then of Rotherfield.

James Greagsbey next married Elizabeth Osborne on 13 October 1801 in Lamberhurst.

James and Elizabeth had 8 known children:

    1. Mary Greagsbey was baptised on 7 November 1802 in Lamberhurst.  She may have married William Bridgeland on 30 May 1826 in Lamberhurst.

    2. Elizabeth Greagsby was baptised on 16 December 1804 in Lamberhurst.

    3. James Greagsby was baptised on 18 January 1807 in Lamberhurst.

    4. Thomas Greagsby was baptised on 2 April 1809 in Lamberhurst.  He married Sylvia Stapley by banns on 19 August 1829 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.

    5. Sophia Greagsbey was baptised on 13 February 1814 in Lamberhurst.

    6. Ann Grigsby was baptised on 29 June 1817 in Lamberhurst.

    7. William Gregsby was baptised on 12 August 1821 in Lamberhurst.

    8. Jane Greagsbey was baptised on 7 November 1824 in Lamberhurst.

  3. John Greagsbey was baptised on 20 November 1770 in Lamberhurst.  He married Mary Tonkin in 1793.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Sarah Greagsbey was baptised on 20 November 1770 in Lamberhurst.  She or her mother may have been buried on 20 July 1788 in Lamberhurst, or she may have married William Waghorne on 12 April 1808 in Lamberhurst.  She was then of Goudhurst, Kent.
