William GRIGSBY (c1686-1753)

and Elizabeth (?-?)

William Grigsby and Elizabeth were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married sometime before of  about 1718.

William Grigsby's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was a blacksmith.  William died aged 67 years on 9 October 1753 and was buried in Lamberhurst, Kent.  The inscription on his headstone implies that he was survived by 1 son and 2 daughters.  He may have been born in Marden, Kent and have been the son of Thomas Greagsbey and Silvester Grinstead who were married on 19 October 1685.

Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

William Grigsby and Elizabeth may have had 4 known children:

  1. William Grigsby was baptised aged 4 days on 5 November 1718 in Lamberhurst.  He married Mary Austin in 1744.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Elizabeth Grigsby, my 6x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 5 February 1720/1 in Lamberhurst.  She married Nicholas Barham in 1747.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Ann Grigsby was baptised on 25 November 1722 in Lamberhurst.  She died aged 3 years on 4 January 1725/6 and was buried in Lamberhurst.

  4. Ruth Grigsby may have been a daughter of William and Elizabeth.

Ruth married Edward Rumings on 26 July 1751 in Battle, Sussex.  At the time she was of Lamberhurst and he of Battle.

Edward and Ruth had 3 known children:

    1. Ann Rumens was baptised on 21 October 1752 in Lamberhurst.  As Ann Rummens she may have married John Sharp on 3 July 1778 in Lamberhurst.

    2. Mary Rumens was baptised on 22 June 1754 in Lamberhurst.

    3. Sarah Rumens was baptised on 27 December 1761 in Lamberhurst.
