John GREAGSBEY (1770-1848)

and Mary Ann TONKIN (1774-1848)

 

John Greagsbey and Mary Tonkin married by banns on 26 December 1793 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  He was then of Lamberhurst and she of Wadhurst.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Greagsbey was baptised on 20 November 1770 in Lamberhurst, Kent.  He was the son of William Greagsbey and Sarah Wakelin.  John died on 18 November 1848 in Lamberhurst and was buried there.  His death was registered by his death Sarah Jeffery.

Mary Ann Tonkin was born in 1774.  She died on 24 December 1848 in Lamberhurst and was buried with her husband.

 

John Greagsbey and Mary Ann Tonkin had 10 known children:

  1. Sarah Grigsby was baptised on 22 June 1794 in Lamberhurst.  She died on 17 March 1878.

    Sarah married William Jeffery on 25 December 1814 in Lamberhurst.

  2. William Greagsbey was baptised on 29 May 1796 in Lamberhurst.  He died in 1880.

    William married Hannah Groombridge on 24 October 1819 in Speldhurst, Kent.

    William and Hannah had 10 children.

  3. Joseph Greagsby was baptised on 18 March 1798 in Lamberhurst.  He died in 1849.

    Joseph married Mercy Waghorn on 7 August 1836 in Lamberhurst.  She was then of Wadhurst.

    Joseph and Mercy had 5 children.

  4. John Greagsby was baptised on 4 May 1800 in Lamberhurst.  He died aged 66 years on 7 March 1867 and was buried in Lamberhurst.

    John married Mary Maynard of Goudhurst.

    Mary died aged 67 years on 12 September 1867 and was buried with her husband and 2 of their sons, William and Joseph.

    John and Mary had 8 children.

  5. Harriet Greagsby was baptised on 28 March 1802 in Lamberhurst.  She died in 1864.

    Harriet married John Winter on 19 October 1824 in Lamberhurst.

    John was born in 1804 and died in 1879.

    John and Harriet had 11 children.

  6. Mary Ann Greagsby was baptised on 25 December 1804 in Lamberhurst.  She died after 1870 as when the US census was recorded in that year she was living in Mooers, New York.

    As Mary Greagsbey she married Edward Beanney on 15 May 1829 in Lamberhurst.

    Edward died in 1864 and is buried in Mooers Forks Union Cemetery in Mooers Forks, Clinton County, New York.

    Edward, Mary and children immigrated to the US sometime after 1839.

    Edward and Mary had 6 known children:

    1. Joseph Beaney was baptised on 31 May 1829 in Lamberhurst.

      Joseph married Matilda.  She was born in Canada.

      When the 1880 US census was recorded he was a 50 year old laborer living in Altona, Clinton County, New York along with his 39 year old wife and 8 children.

      The couple had the following known children:

      1. Joseph Beaney was born about 1862.  He was an 18 year old laborer in 1880.

      2. Mary J. Beaney was born about 1863.  She was 17 at the time of the 1880 census.

      3. Elizabeth Beaney was born about 1865.  In 1880 she was 15.

      4. Naomi Beaney was born about 1866.  She was 14 in 1880.

      5. Henry Beaney was born about 1869.  He was 11 in 1880.

      6. Marsell Beaney was born about 1871.  In 1880 he was 9 years old.

      7. Amelia Beaney was born about 1874.  She was 6 years old in 1880.

      8. William Beaney was born about 1876.  When the 1880 census was recorded he was 4 years old.

    2. John Beaney was baptised on 4 September 1831 in Lamberhurst.

      John married Sarah.  She was born in Ireland.

      At the time of the 1880 US census John was a 50 year old farmer living with his 40 year old wife and 4 children in Altona, Clinton County.

      The couple had the following known children:

      1. William Beaney was born about 1864.  He was 16 years old in 1880.

      2. Sarah Beaney was born about 1867.  She was 13 years old in 1880.

      3. Mary Beaney was born about 1870.  In 1880 she was 10.

      4. Emma Beaney was born about 1874.  When the 1880 census was recorded she was 6 years old.

    3. Mary Anne Beaney was baptised on 3 November 1833 in Lamberhurst.

    4. Edward Beaney was born about January 1836.  He died aged 13 years and 3 months on 10 April 1849 and was buried in the Sweet Cemetery, Champlain, Clinton Country, New York.

    5. Naomi Beaney (possibly Nahomia).  When the 1880 US census was recorded she may have been unmarried 36 year old Naomi Bena living in Chazy, Clinton County, where she was a domestic servant in the home of Amosa B. Wood.

    6. Henry Beaney was born about 1843.

  7. Ruth Greagsby was baptised in February 1807 in Lamberhurst.  She died in 1875.

    Ruth married Richard Hinton in 1827 in St. Leonards, Shoreditch.

    The couple emigrated to the USA.

    Richard and Ruth had 7 children.

  8. Edward Greagsby was baptised on 23 April 1809 in Lamberhurst.

  9. James Greagsby was baptised on 11 October 1812 in Lamberhurst.  He died in 1894

    James married Matilda Bailey on 28 July 1835 in Lamberhurst.

    James and Matilda had 3 known children.

  10. Alfred Greagsby was baptised on 1 October 1815 in Lamberhurst.  He died in 1886.

    Alfred married Mary Blunt on 3 September 1836 in Horsmonden, Kent.  He was then a bachelor of Ticehurst, Sussex and she a spinster of Horsmonden.

    Alfred and Mary had 8 children.
