Joseph GREENFIELD (1666-1729)

and Elizabeth (c1670-?)

Joseph Greenfield and Elizabeth most probably married sometime before or about 1690, and possibly in or near Billingshurst, Sussex.

Joseph Greenfield was baptised on 25 February 1665/6 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  The baptism register noted that his father was from Winstrolls Wood.  He was the son of Joseph Greenfield (1634-1699) and Susanna (c1640-1684).  Joseph was buried on 20 February 1728/9 in Billingshurst.

Elizabeth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  An Elizabeth Greenfield, widow, was buried on 3 January 1730/1 in Billingshurst.  Another Elizabeth Greenfield was buried in Billingshurst on 13 June 1740, and a widow Greenfield was buried there on 30 June 1743.

On 17 August 1700, Joseph Greenfield of Billingshurst, took on William Manser as an apprentice.  Then on 31 May 1722 he took on Zephaniah Bransden as an apprentice.

Joseph Greenfield and Elizabeth had 8 known children:

Elizabeth's name was only recorded against the baptism of their last known child.  All the other baptism only noted Joseph's name.

  1. Thomas Greenfield was baptised on 1 January 1690/1 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that he was the son of Joseph Greenfield, junior from Pratts.  Thomas was buried on 19 October 1694 in Billingshurst and the burial register noted that he was the son of Joseph Greenfield from Pratts.

  2. William Greenfield was baptised on 6 January 1692/3 in Billingshurst.  He may have died in the workhouse and have been buried on 10 June 1771 in Bilingshurst.

William may have married Elizabeth, possibly Elizabeth Manser on 14 May 1733 in Pulborough.

A widow Greenfield died in the workhouse and was buried on 23 November 1774 in Billingshurst.

William and Elizabeth had the following children:

    1. William Greenfield was baptised on 30 October 1733 in Billingshurst.  It was noted in the baptism register that his parents were form Pratts.

    2. John Greenfield was baptised on 19 January 1736/7 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register recorded that his parents were from Pratt.

    3. Arthur Greenfield was baptised on 7 March 1738/9 in Billingshurst.

    4. Daniel Greenfield was baptised on 5 April 1741 in Billingshurst.

    5. Joseph Greenfield was baptised on 3 April 1743 in Billingshurst.

    6. Thomas Greenfield was baptised on 2 August 1747 in Billingshurst.

  3. Sarah Greenfield was baptised on 13 January 1694/5 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was from Pratts.

  4. Elizabeth Greenfield was baptised on 22 September 1697 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was Joseph Greenfield, junior from Pratts.  Elizabeth daughter of Joseph Greenfield, yeoman, was buried on 26 April 1701 in Billingshurst.

  5. Mary Greenfield was baptised on 2 April 1700 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was a yeoman.  Might she have married James Graffham on 29 March 1719 in Billingshurst?  He was from Wisborough Green and she was of Billingshurst.

  6. Thomas Greenfield was baptised on 1 March 1702/3 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a yeoman from Pratts.

  7. John Greenfield was baptised on 2 November 1705 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted that his father was a yeoman.

  8. Elizabeth Greenfield was baptised on 28 July 1709 in Billingshurst.  Might she have married Jonathan Holden on 31 March 1732 in Billingshurst?

A John Bransden married Allice Manser on 3 June 1683 in Billingshurst.  He was from Arundel and she from Wiggonholt.  A William Manser was baptised on 14 September 1690 in Billingshurst, the son of Richard Manser William Manser may have married Olive Richardson on 24 July 1716 in Thakeham.
