Edmund GREENFIELD (c1750-1831)

and Elizabeth BROOKS (1754-?)

 

Edmund Greenfield and Elizabeth Brooks married by banns on 30 September 1778 in Slinfold, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Edmund Greenfield's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 14 August 1831 in Slinfold (ref.1) (what was his age at death?).  Might he have been baptised on 17 April 1757 in Billingshurst, Sussex, the son of John Greenfield and Sarah Jeal?  Or was he born on 2 April 1748 and baptised on 26 April 1748 in Rudgwick, Sussex, the son of Edmund Greenfield?

Betty Brooks was baptised on 10 March 1754 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Edward Brooks (1721-1802) and Mary Soutter (1729-1796).

 

Edmund Greenfield and Elizabeth Brooks had 10 known children:

  1. James Greenfield was baptised on 9 April 1780 in Slinfold.

  2. Sarah Greenfield was baptised on 10 June 1781 in Slinfold.

    Sarah married James Whitenton on 19 March 1801 in Slinfold.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Slinfold.

  3. Fanny Greenfield was baptised on 28 September 1783 in Slinfold.

  4. Edward Greenfield was baptised on 28 May 1786 in Slinfold.

  5. John Greefield was baptised on 30 March 1788 in Slinfold.

    John may have married Sarah Garman by banns on 7 February 1815 in Slinfold.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Slinfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Garman and Sarah Charman.

  6. Thomas Greenfield was baptised on 15 May 1791 in Slinfold.

    Thomas may have married Hannah Hersey by banns on 24 November 1814 in Warnham.  He was then a bachelor of Warnham and she a spinster of Itchingfield who married with the consent of her parents.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Bennett and John Parker.

  7. Arthur Greenfield was baptised on 24 January 1796 in Slinfold.

    Arthur married Ann Buckman by banns on 14 May 1825 in Slinfold.  He was then a bachelor and she spinster and minor.  They were both of Slinfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were Mary Buckman, John Patching, Ann Ellis and Mary Ellis.

  8. Elizabeth Greenfield was baptised on 27 May 1798 in Slinfold.

  9. Matthew Greenfield was baptised on 4 October 1801 in Slinfold.

    Matthew married Mary Freeman by banns on 13 May 1826 in Slinfold.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and minor.  They were both of Slinfold.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Greenfield, Sarah Greenfield and Sarah Freeman.

    Mary was baptised on 1 May 1803 in Slinfold and was the daughter of Richard Freeman.

  10. Zephaniah Greenfield was baptised on 6 January 1805 in Slinfold.

    Zephaniah married twice, firstly to Mary Holloway by banns on 28 February 1829 in Slinfold.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Slinfold.  Mary married with the consent of her parent(s).  The witnesses to their marriage were James Pullinger and Sarah Holloway.

    As a widower Zephaniah next married Mercy Mary Atwater on 24 December 1834 in Itchingfield.  They were both then of Itchingfield.

    Zephaniah and Mercy Mary had the following children:

    1. Matthew Greenfield was born about 1836 in Slinfold.

    2. Mark Greenfield was baptised on 27 January 1839 in Slinfold.

    3. Mary Ann Greenfield was baptised on 14 March 1841 in Slinfold.

      Mary Ann married David Steer on 1 August 1864 in Slinfold (ref.2).

      David was baptised on 26 May 1841 in Billingshurst and was the son of Thomas Steere and Mary Patching.

      At the time of the 1871 census the couple and their daughter were living at Little Pinkhurst in Slinfold.  He was then said to he a 28 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 30 years old.  Also with them on census night was David's widower father 62 year old Thomas Steere who was also an agricultural labourer.  When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at East Lands in Billingshurst.  They were both then aged 40 years and David was an agricultural labourer.

      David and Mary Ann had the following children:

      1. George Steer was baptised on 2 February 1865 in Slinfold and buried there on 12 February 1865.

      2. Alice Steer was baptised on 12 May 1867 in Slinfold.  At the time of the 1871 census she was 4 years old.  She was a 14 year old domestic servant in 1881.

      3. Olive Steer was baptised on 24 December 1871 in Slinfold.  She was a 9 year old scholar in 1881.

        Olive married Thomas Simmons by banns on 6 November 1889 in Billingshurst.  She was then an 18 year old spinster and he was a 22 year old bachelor and labourer.  Their fathers were named as Mark Simmons and David Steer who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were David Steer and Rosa Steer.

      4. Rosa Steer was baptised on 4 April 1875 in Billingshurst, at which time her father was a labourer from Eastland.  In 1881 she was a 6 year old scholar.

        Rosa married James Wicks in 1895 in Billingshurst (ref.2).

        James and Rosa had the following daughter:

        1. Alice Wicks married Frank Radbourne in 1923 in Billingshurst (ref.2).

      5. Jesse Steer was baptised on 30 September 1877 in Billingshurst.  He was 3 years old in 1881.

      6. Henry Steer was baptised on 11 April 1880 in Billingshurst.  At the time of the 1881 census he was a year old.

      7. William David Steer was baptised on 23 March 1884 in Billingshurst.

    4. Luke Greenfield was baptised on 16 July 1842 in Slinfold.

    5. John Greenfield was baptised on 22 June 1845 in Slinfold.
