Daniel Greenfield and Sarah Thorns married
by banns on 14 November 1815 in West Grinstead, Sussex. The witnesses
to their marriage were William Gale and Sarah Laker.
(They were not my direct ancestors. Sarah's sister Hannah
Thorns may have been by 4x Great Grandmother.)
Daniel Greenfield was baptised on 16 April 1780 in
Horsham, Sussex. He was the son of
Zephaniah Greenfield
(1752-1838) and Susanna Stenning (1752-1841).
Daniel died aged 70 years and was buried on 24 April
1850 in Horsham.
Sarah Thorns was baptised as Sarah Thomas on 12 August 1792 in Warnham,
Sussex (as per a trancript of the baptism register). She was the
daughter of
Ralph
Thorns (1764-1835) and
Sarah Hill
(c1769-1835). Sarah died aged 81 years and was buried on 13
December 1873 in Horsham.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 of their children were
living in North Street, Horsham. Daniel was recorded as a 61 year
old carpenter and Sarah was 50. Also with the family on census
night were 74 year old Mary Rowland and 13 year old
Eliz Rowland.
The 1851 census records that Sarah was a 62 year old widow and charwoman
and she was living at the top of North Street, Horsham, along with 2 of
her sons and 7 year old grandson, Robert Greenfield.
Sarah gave her place of birth in the census as Warnham.
In 1861, Sarah was a 74 year old widow and she was living with the family
of her son William at the top of North Street, Horsham. She was
then a laundress.
At the time of the 1871 census, Sarah was a 78 year old laundress and
living with the family of her son William in North Street, Horsham.

had 6 known children:

Rebecca Greenfield was baptised on 28 April 1816 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
carpenter. She died unmarried aged 33 years and was buried on 1
March 1849 in Horsham. When the 1841 census was recorded she was
living with her parents and it was noted in the census that she was 25
years old.
Rebecca had an illegitimate son:

Robert Greenfield was born about 1844 and baptised aged
5 years on 8 April 1849 in Horsham. In 1851 he was 7 years old and
living with his grandmother. When the 1861 and 1871 census were
recorded he was living with the family of his uncle William
Greenfield. In 1861 he was said to be 18 years old and in
1871 he was an unmarried 25 year old fireman.

Benjamin Greenfield was baptised on 15 March 1818 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted hat his his father was a
carpenter. He died aged 80 years and was buried on 22 September
1898 in Horsham.
Benjamin married twice, firstly to Ellen Jeffrys by
banns on 9 August 1840 in Horsham. He was a bachelor and labourer
and she was spinster and minor. Their fathers were named as
Daniel Greenfield and William Jeffrys
who were both carpenters. The witnesses to their marriage were
George Piper and Mary Wood. He
next married Elizabeth Laker in the first quarter of
1882 in the Croydon registration district.
Ellen was baptised on 23 November 1823 in Epsom, Surrey and was the
daughter of William Jeffrys and Margaret.
She died aged 44 years and was buried on 2 February 1868 in Horsham, as
Helen Greenfield.
In 1851 the couple and 4 children were living at the top of North
Street, Horsham. Benjamin was a 33 year old carpenter journeyman
and Ellen was 27.
Benjamin and Ellen had the following children:

Benjamin John Greenfield was born on 5 January 1841
and baptised on 7 February 1841 in Horsham. He was a 10 year
old scholar in 1851.

Albert George Greenfield was baptised on 8
September 1844 in Horsham. He was a 7 year old scholar in
1851.
Albert George married Louisa Burridge by banns on
23 June 1866 in Horsham. He was a 22 year bachelor and
carpenter and she was a 22 year spinster. Their fathers was
named as Benjamin Greenfield a carpenter and
James Penfold a labourer. The witnesses to
their marriage were Lewis Moore and Thamar
Francis.

Margaret Jeffery Greenfield was baptised on 25 May
1847 in Horsham. She was 4 years old in 1851.
Margaret married James Mitchell by banns on 10
February 1872 in Horsham. He was a 21 year old bachelor and
smith and she was a 25 year old spinster. Their fathers were
named as Edward Mitchell a smith and
Benjamin Greenfield a carpenter. The witnesses to
their marriage were Benjamin Greenfield and
Fanny Greenfield.

Anne Rebecca Greenfield was baptised on 20 April
1851 in Horsham. At the time of the 1851 census she was 2
months old.
As Annis Greenfield married James Diplock
by banns on 13 July 1872 in Horsham. He was a bachelor and
engineer and she a spinster. They were both aged 22 years.
Their fathers were named as David Diplock a
labourer and Benjamin Greenfield a carpenter.
The witnesses to their marriage were Edward Childs
and Elizabeth Childs.

Fanny Eliza Greenfield was baptised on 3 July 1853
in Horsham. The baptism register noted that her father was a
carpenter.

Alexander Daniel Greenfield was baptised on 11 May
1856 in Horsham. He died aged 5 years and was buried on 21
July 1861 in Horsham.

Richard Godfrey Greenfield was baptised on 12
September 1858 in Horsham. He died aged 6 years and was buried
on 14 September 1864 in Horsham.

Ralph James Greenfield was baptised on 21 April
1861 in Horsham.
Ralph James married Elizabeth Ann Mills by banns on
2 May 1885 in Horsham. He was a 24 year old bachelor and
brickmaker and she was a 27 year old spinster. Their fathers
were named as Benjamin Greenfield a carpenter and
James Mills, deceased. The witnesses to their
marriage were Richard Rendall and Ellen
Horley.

Ambrose Greenfield was baptised on 11 October 1863
in Horsham. Ambrose married Rosina Stenning
by banns on 18 May 1891 in Horsham. He was a 27 year old
bachelor and carpenter and she was a 22 year old spinster.
Their fathers were named as Benjamin Greenfield and
Charles Stenning who were both carpenters.
The witnesses to their marriage were Sarah Stenning
and William Randell.

Alfred Barrington Greenfield was baptised on 18
August 1867 in Horsham. He died aged 23 months and was buried
on 26 May 1869 in Horsham.

Peter Greenfield was baptised on 5 May 1822 in Horsham.
A transcript of the Horsham baptism register has his father's name as
Samuel and that he was a carpenter. He died aged 87 years and his
death was registered in the first quarter of 1910 in the Horsham
registration district. The 1841 census recorded that he was an 18
year old shoemaker's apprentice. When the 1871 census was recorded
44 year old Peter was a bricklayer's labourer and he was staying with
his brother William.
Peter married Elizabeth Rowland in the third quarter of
1843 in the Horsham registration district.
Elizabeth was baptised on 30 March 1828 in Horsham and was the daughter
of Elizabeth Rowland.
Peter and Elizabeth had the following children:

Elizabeth Mary Greenfield was baptised on 25
February 1844 in Horsham. The baptism register noted that her
father was a shoemaker.

George Greenfield was baptised on 7 March 1847 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
labourer.

Sarah Ann Greenfield was baptised on 23 September
1849 in Horsham.

Charles Greenfield was baptised on 23 January 1853
in Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
shoemaker.

Richard Greenfield was baptised on 26 September 1824 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
carpenter. He died aged 4 years and was buried on 20 March 1829 in
Horsham.

Daniel Greenfield was baptised on 16 April 1827 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
carpenter and his mother's name was Elizabeth. There was a couple
named Daniel and Elizabeth who had children baptised in Horsham at the
same time as Daniel and Sarah, but Daniel married to Elizabeth was a
labourer. He died aged 29 years and was buried on 13 July 1856 in
Horsham. In 1841 he was 13 years old and living with his parents.
He was an unmarried 23 year old carpenter journeyman in 1851 and living
at home with his mother.

William Greenfield was baptised on 3 October 1830 in
Horsham. The baptism register noted that his father was a
carpenter. He married
Sarah Batchelor
