Joseph GRATWICKE (1669-1748)

and Mary ARNOLD (1675-1735)

 

Joseph Gratwick and Mary Arnold were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart).  They married on 18 July 1697 in West Grinstead, Sussex.

Joseph Gratwicke was baptised on 22 February 1668/9 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Andrew Gratwicke (1631-1704) and Winifred.  He was mentioned in the 1717 will of his uncle Owen Gratwicke.  Joseph died aged 80 years and was buried on 2 August 1748 in West Grinstead.

Mary Arnold was baptised on 3 October 1675 in West Grinstead.  She was the daughter of Thomas Arnold and Elizabeth Grant.  Mary was buried on 3 July 1735 in West Grinstead.  The burial register noted that Mary was the wife of Joseph Gratwick.

 

Joseph Gratwick and Mary Arnold had 6 known children:

  1. Mary Gratwicke was baptised on 9 April 1698 in West Grinstead.

  2. Elizabeth Gratwicke was my 6x Great Grandmother.  She was baptised on 5 January 1700/1 in West Grinstead.  She married Peter Tullet in 1726.  (They have their own page.)  A transcript of the West Grinstead parish registers names her parents as John and Mary, whereas the Comber genealogies, Horsham centre, gives Joseph and Mary.  A John Gratwick married Mary Harland on 2 February 1687/8 in Cowfold.  John was a carpenter of Cowfold.  John of Godshill, Cowfold had a daughter Elizabeth baptised in 1695 in Cowfold.

  3. Anne Gratwick was baptised on 30 March 1706 in West Grinstead.

    Ann may have married John Morgan on 18 February 1728/9 at St. Benet and St. Peter Paul's in London.  She was then a spinster of West Grinstead and he a bachelor of St. George, Southwark.

  4. William Gratwick was baptised on 5 November 1708 in West Grinstead.  He married Mary Lylliatt in 1734.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Sarah Gratwick was baptised on 22 April 1710 in West Grinstead.

    Sarah may have married Drew Bird on 31 December 1745 in the Fleet Prison, London.  She was a spinster of West Grinstead and he a bachelor and mercer of Henfield.

  6. Jane Gratwick was baptised on 27 March 1714/5 in West Grinstead.

    Jane may have married Edward Soughton on 5 May 1735 in Sompting, Sussex.  She was from West Grinstead and he of Lancing.

    Edward and Jane had the following children:

    1. Jane Sowton was baptised on 27 March 1736 in Lancing.

      Jane may have married George Lamport on 30 November 1759 in Lancing.

    2. Sara Souten was baptised on 26 January 1738 in Lancing.

      Sarah may have married Frank Winton by licence on 2 June 1768 in Lancing.  She was then a spinster of Lancing and he a farmer of Sompting.

    3. Edward Souten was baptised on 8 January 1748 in Lancing.

      Edward may have married Jane Burchel on 15 September 1780 in Steyning, Sussex.  He was then from Lancing.

    4. William Souton was baptised on 21 February 1749 in Lancing and buried there on 11 July 1750.

    5. Kitty Souton was baptised on 22 May 1752 in Lancing.

    6. William Souton was baptised on 11 March 1756 in Lancing.
