John GRATWICK (1804-1884)

and Elizabeth STRINGER (1815-1889)

John Gratwick and Elizabeth Stringer married by banns on 15 April 1837 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Caleb Osbourne and Edward Freeman.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Gratwick was baptised on 5 February 1804 in West Grinstead.  He was the son of William Gratwick (c1773-1839) and Elizabeth Linfield (1782-1866).  John died aged 79 years and was buried on 10 January 1884 in Itchingfield, Sussex.  The burial register noted that he was from Rats Castle.

When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and their 2 children were living at Dialpost in the parish of of West Grinstead.  John was then said to be a 35 year old agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 25.

By the time of the 1851 census the couple and 5 children were living in at Wedges in Itchingfield.  John was a 46 year old farm bailiff and Elizabeth was 35.  They both gave their place of birth as West Grinstead.

In 1861 the couple and 4 children were living at Youngs in Itchingfield.  John was then said to be a 52 (I think that's his recorded age, but there is a line though what looks the 2) year old agricultural labourer and Elizabeth was 46.

The 1871 census recorded the couple and 4 children were living at Coopers in Itchingfield.  John was a 67 years old farm labourer and Elizabeth was 56.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living alone, near Coopers in Itchingfield.  He was then a 77 year old agricultural labourer and she was 66.
