George GRANTHAM (1749-1836)

and Ann TUTT (1757-1834)

 

George Grantham and Ann Tutt married by licence on 25 August 1782 at St. Michael's in Lewes, Sussex.  At the time they were both of the parish of St. Michael's.  He was aged 25 and upwards and she a spinster aged 22 and upwards.  Their marriage licence was dated 23 August 1782 and issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ann was the niece of my 6x Great Grandmother, Ann Tutt.)

George Grantham was born on 7 December 1749 and baptised on 26 December 1749 at St. Michael's in Lewes.  He was the son of George Grantham and Anne Douglas.  He died aged 86 years and was buried on 24 April 1836 at St. Michael's in Lewes..  George was a basket maker.

Ann Tutt was baptised on 12 May 1757 in Chailey, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Stephen Tutt (1728-1803) and Elizabeth Apps (1731-1809).  Ann died aged 76 years and was buried on 16 August 1834 at St. Michael's in Lewes.

 

George Grantham and Ann Tutt had 9 known children:

  1. George Grantham was born on 20 September 1782 in Lewes.  He died on 23 October 1849 in Barcombe, Sussex and was buried in Barcombe churchyard.  The family lived in the High Street, Lewes.

    George married Sarah Verrall on 30 May 1829 at the parish church of St. John the Baptists in Lewes.

    Sarah was born on 31 October 1795 in Southover in Lewes and was the daughter of William Verrall and Sarah Turll.  She was baptised at Barcombe on 11 February 1798.  Sarah died in 1871 in Barcombe.

  2. Stephen Grantham was born on 11 November 1783 in Lewes.  He died between 1851 and 1861.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was living in Riders Wells, South Malling, Sussex and he was a land agent.  He was also a farmer of Southdown sheep of good repute.

    Stephen married Mary Knight on 27 April 1810 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster.

    Mary was born in Offham, Sussex and baptised on 5 November 1788 in Hamsey, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Knight and Mary Marchant.  Mary died between 1851 and 1861.

  3. John Grantham was born on 30 April 1785 in Lewes and died there on 3 July 1801.

  4. Elizabeth Grantham was born on 7 December 1792 in Lewes.  She died as a result of being thrown from a carriage on 28 July 1830.

    Elizabeth married Stephen Lowdell on 29 March 1819 at St. Giles, Cripplegate, London.

    Stephen was born on 10 April 1791 in Lewes and was baptised in the parish church of St. Michael, Lewes on 30 April 1820.  He was the son of Joseph Coventry Lowdell and Sarah Wakeling.  He died after 1870.  Stephen was an ironmonger in 1826 and was then living in Lewes.  In 1859 he was living in Church Street, Seaford, Sussex.

  5. Edward Grantham was born on 25 December 1798 in Lewes.  He died on 7 February 1881 in Lewes and was buried in the Lewes cemetery.  In 1826 he was an ironmonger living in Lewes.  He was still an ironmonger in 1851 and he then employed 12 men.

    Edward married twice.  Firstly to Ann or Elizabeth Lewes on 17 November 1852 at St. John the Baptist in Lewes.  She died in 1859 in Lewes.

    Edward next married Mary Blaker.

    Mary was born in 1812 in Selmeston, Sussex and was the daughter of Nathaniel Blaker and Anna Hodson.  She died on 24 April 1891 in Steyning.  When the 1881 census was recorded Mary was living at 167 High Street, Lewes.

  6. Henry Grantham was born on 30 March 1788 in Lewes.  He died on 25 January 1793 in Lewes.

  7. Ann Grantham was born on 17 February 1790 in Lewes.  She died there on 9 July 1816.

  8. Sarah Grantham was born on 6 March 1796 in Lewes.  She died there on 12 September 1819.

  9. Harriet Grantham was born on 25 June 1800 in Lewes and died there on 20 April 1801.
