The Will of
Daniel GRANT
(1701-1775)

This is the last Will and Testament of me
Daniel Grant of Cowfold in the County of
Sussex Gentleman First I give and devise unto my sister Jane now the
wife of Edward Dowler of Cowfold aforesaid Yeoman All that my
Customary or Copyhold Cottage or Tenement with the Garden Orchard or parcel
of Ground and Premises therein belonging situate lying and being in the
Parish of Bolney in the said County now in the several occupation of
Simon Reeve and William Heasman or their Assigns and holden of
the Manor of Ditcheling Garden in the same County and which I have
surrendered to the use of my Will To hold the same Premises with the
Appurtenances unto my said sister Jane Dowler and her Heirs and
Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor Also I give and
devise unto my Niece Ann now the wife of Joseph Bates of
Nuthurst in the said County Farmer All that my Customary or Copyhold Crot or
Close of Land containing by estimation half an Acre (more or less) formerly
parcel of Freethland And Also all that my Customary or Copyhold Cottage or
Tenement with the Garden Orchard or small parcel of Land and Premises
thereunto belonging situate and being in the Parish of Cowfold aforesaid now
in the occupation of John Coomber or his Assisgns and holden of the
Manor of Beeding in the said County and which last mentioned Pemises I have
likewise surrendered to the use of my Will To hold the same Croft or Close
of Land Cottage or Tenement Garden Orchard or samll parcel of Land and
Premises with the Appurtences unto my said Niece Ann Bates and her
Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor of
Beeding Subject nevertheless and charged and chargeable with the payment of
the several Legacies hereinafter mentioned (that is to say) To my Nephew
Daniel Batchelor of Shipley in the said County Husbandman the sum of ten
Pounds To my Niece Sarah now the wife of John Neeve of West
Grinstead in the said County Labourer the sum of ten Pounds To John
and Thomas Neeve sons of the aforesaid John and Sarah Neeve
the sum of ten Pounds a piece which said four several sums of ten Pounds
each I do hereby give and bequeath unto them the said Daniel Bachelor
~ Sarah Neeve ~ John Neeve the younger and Thomas Neeve
to be [---] and payable out of the said Copyhold Premises holden of the
Manor of Beeding aforesaid and I do hereby charge and subject the same
Premises with the payment thereof accordingly Also I give and bequeath unto
my Brother Richard Grant of Thakeham in the said County Labourer the
sum of fifty pounds To my Niece Sarah now the wife of Charles
Chate of Henfield in the said County Husbandman and Daughter of my said
Brother Richard Grant the sum of Ten Pounds To my Nephews and Niece
John ~ William ~ Richard and Sarah Sons and
Daughter of my late sister Elizabeth Batchelor deceased the sum of
twelve Pounds a piece To the aforesaid Daniel Batchelor who is also
another son of my said sister Elizabeth the sum of twelve Pounds more
To my Nephew and Niece John and Elizabeth Son and Daughter of
my (Daniel Grant) late Brother Thomas Grant deceased the sum
of ten Pounds a piece To my Niece Ann another Daughter of my said
Brother Thomas Grant the sum of fifteen Pounds And to my said Niece
Sarah Neeve the sum of thirty Pounds more All which said several
Legacies or Sums of money I do direct shall be of good and lawful money of
Great Britain and shall be respectively paid unto my said several Legatees
within six months next after my decease All the rest and Residue of my
Estate both real and Personal whatsoever and wheresoever that I shall be
possess of at the time of my decease not herein before by me disposed of I
give devise and bequeath unto my said Brother in Law Edward Dowler
and my said Nephew Richard Batchelor to be equally divided between
them share and share alike as Tenants in Common and not as Joint tenants And
I do nominate constitute and appoint them the said Edward Dowler and
Richard Batchelor joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament
in testimony whereof I the said Daniel Grant the Testator have to
this my last Will and Testament contained in two sheets of Paper set my Hand
and Seal to each sheet thereof this fifteenth day of October in the year of
our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three Daniel Grant

the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us
who have subscribed our Names as the Witnesses in the presence of and at the

I Daniel Grant of the Parish of Cowfold in the County of Sussex
Husbandman do this 27th day of July 1775 make and publish this Codicil to my
last Will and Testament in manner following (that is to say) that John
~ William ~ Richard and Sarah Batchelor Sons and
Daughter of Elizabeth Batchelor my sister deceased shall have no more
than ten pounds a piece and my Brother Richard Grant being deceased
his three youngest Daughters shall have ten pounds apiece and Sarah
the wife of Charles Chate shall not have anything and Sarah
the wife of John Neeve at West Grinstead shall have no more than ten
Pounds and all other Legacies to be paid as the Will directs And lastly it
is my desire that my present Codicil be amended to and made apart of my last
Will and Testament to all Intents and Purposes In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my Hand and Seal this twenty seventy day of July one thousand
seven hundred and seventy five Daniel Grant (LS) Signed Sealed

To be annexed to his last Will and Testament in the presence of us Thomas

The Will and Codicil of Daniel Grant late of Cowfold within the
Archdeaconry of Lewes Gentleman deceased were proved the fifth day of
March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six
Before the Reverend Edward Lund Clerk Surrogate and soforth upon
the oath of Edward Dowler and Richard Batchelor the joint
Executors in his said Will To whom was committed the Administration of the
Goods & They being first sworn well and faithfully to administer the same
and soforth.
