Thomas GODDEN
(c17c0-?)
and Ann HEWS (?-?)

Thomas Goddard and Ann married before
1764. They may have married as Thomas Gotherd
and Ann Hews on 8 December 1763 in Billingshurst,
Sussex.
Thomas was a sojourner and Ann was of Billingshurst. The witnesses
to the marriage were John Hills and William
Joyes. There were no Gotherd baptisms in Billingshurst.
Thomas Goddard's date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me. Might he have been the son
of
5
126
Andrew Godden (c1710-1787) and
5
126
Maria Knight
(1712-?)?
Ann Hew's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to
me. An Ann Goddard aged 41, was buried on 27 March 1789 in
Rudgwick, therefore, born about 1748 (I'm not sure if they were one and
the same.)
Thomas Goddard and Ann Hews had
9 known children:
-
Mary Goddard was baptised on 4 November 1764 in West Chiltington.
-
John Goddard was baptised in March 1766 in West Chiltington.
Might he have died poor aged 27 years and have been buried on 23 April
1792 in Rudgwick?
-
Thomas Goddard was baptised on 21 June 1767 in West Chiltington.
-
Sarah Goddard was baptised on 16 April 1769 in West Chiltington.
-
Ann Goddard was baptised on 1 January 1771 in West Chiltington.
-
Maria Goddard was baptised on 26 July 1772 in West Chiltington.
-
Elizabeth Goddard was baptised on 20 November 1774 in West
Chiltington. She may have died as an infant or child.
-
Jane Goddard was baptised on 4 August 1776 in West Chiltington.
-
Hannah Goddard was baptised on 25 December 1777 in West
Chiltington.
I think Thomas may have been a son of Andrew and Maria, simply because he
named a daughter Maria, which may have been after his mother; and a
daughter Hannah, which may have been after his sister-in-law. Plus
in 1781 a removal order was issued to Thomas and family, returning them to
Rudgwick from West Chiltington (or vice versa), and Rudgwick was where
Andrew and Maria married. Might Thomas have been born there in about
1740? No baptism has been found for him. Nor has his marriage
to Ann been recorded in the IGI or the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes,
unless he married as Thomas Gotherd, sojourner to Ann Hews
in 1763 in Billingshurst.
Might Thomas and Ann have taken in a possible niece,
Jane Godden,
was was born in 1774 and whose mother died in 1778?
