Andrew GODDEN (c1710-1787)

and Maria KNIGHT (1712-?)

 

Holy Trinity, Rudgwick circa 1905 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlAndrew Goden and Maria Knight were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on Friday 21 October 1740 at the parish church of Holy Trinity in Rudgwick, Sussex.  He was then of Pulborough, Sussex.

Andrew Godden's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 18 January 1787 in Pulborough, Sussex.  Andrew was said to be of Pulborough when he married, but he was not baptised there and his daughter's baptism in the parish in 1742 was the first Godden (and variants) event in the parish.  The only possible Andrew Godden baptism in the IGI was on 1 March 1704 in Minstead, Hampshire, the son of John Godden and Sarah Stride.  Minstead to Pulborough is about 60 miles.

Maria Knight was baptised on 17 August 1712 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Knight (c1680-?).  She may have been buried on 29 May 1767 or 18 May 1781.  Both burials took place in Pulborough.  One could be for her and the other of her daughter, but which was which?  Maria was the only child of John to have been baptised in Rudgwick between 1700 and 1720.  Several other Knight children were baptised in Rudgwick to Arthur, James and William.  A John Knight married Rebecca Ives in the 1700 in the neighbouring parish of Cranleigh, Surrey, but they would seem to have had a son baptised in June 1713.

 

Andrew Godden and Maria Knight had 2 known children:

  1. Maria Godden was baptised on 2 May 1742 in Pulborough.  She had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Martha Godden was baptised on 16 September 1764 in Pulborough and buried there on 31 December 1765.  Her name was recorded as Martha Godwin in the burial register.

  2. Andrew Goddin, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 5 May 1745 in Pulborough.  He married Hannah Henry in 1770.  (They have their own page.)

 

Might Andrew and Maria had been the parents of Thomas Goddard who married Ann before 1764?  (They have their own page.)

 

 

John Knight and Rebecca Ives married on 10 October 1700 in Cranley, Surrey.  They may have had the following children:

  1. John Knight was born on 9 October 1701 and baptised on 7 November 1701 in Cranley.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  2. Sarah Knight was born on 16 March 1703 and baptised on 2 April 1703 in Cranley.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  3. Richard Knight was baptised on 29 September 1708 in Cranley.  Only his father;s name was recorded in the baptism register.

  4. John Knight was baptised on 21 June 1713 in Cranley.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  5. Elizabeth Knight was baptised on 19 August 1716 in Cranley.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

 

 

Andrew Gydwin and Dorothy Huke married on 26 June 1570 in Wisborough Green.

Andrew Godwin of Singleton married Alice Collins on 17 October 1613 in St. Pancras, Chichester.

Andrew Goddad married Mary May on 5 September 1624 in West Wittering.

Andrew Godden was baptised on 18 December 1625 in Singleton, the son of Andrew Godden.
