William GOBLE (c1720-?)

and Ann (c1725-?)

William Goble and Ann may have been my 5x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see possible their place in my pedigree chart.)  They may have married sometime before or about 1746 in the Selham area of Sussex.  No possible marriage has been found for them in the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes, or the IGI.  There was another couple by the name of William Goble and Ann who had children baptised in Easebourne, Sussex between 1756 and 1768.

William Goble may have been baptised on 22 April 1716 in Burton, Sussex, the son of John Goble and Mary Cornelius, or possibly on 20 April 1722 in Fernhurst, Sussex, the son of William Goble and Jane Varndle.

Ann's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

William Goble and Ann may have had the following children:

  1. Ann Goble was baptised on 1 June 1746 in Selham, Sussex and buried there on 3 August 1746.

  2. William Goble was baptised on 16 August 1747 in Selham.

  3. John Goble was baptised on 8 October 1749 in Selham.  He may have died aged 77 years and have been buried on 6 March 1828 in Graffham, Sussex.

John may have married Ann Hall by banns on 11 October 1774 in Woolavington.  At the time of their marriage they were both of Woolavington.  John made his X mark and Ann signed her name.  The witnesses were James Mills (signed) and William Knight (mark).

John and Ann had 3 known children:

    1. Elizabeth Goble was baptised on 11 May 1777 in Woolavington.

Elizabeth married James Kentfield on 27 September 1796 in Graffham.

James was baptised on 11 August 1776 in Graffham and was the son of John Kentfield and Sarah Heather.  James and Elizabeth had 10 known children.

    2. Ann Goble was baptised on 5 December 1779 in Graffham.

    3. George Goble was baptised on 29 June 1783 in Upwaltham, Sussex.

  4. Mary Goble was baptised on 1 March 1752 in Selham.

Mary may have married Richard Riddel by licence on 8 July 1779 in Selham.  But in their marriage licence, Mary was said to be a 22 year old spinster of Selham (1 month), therefore, she was born about 1757.  Richard was a 26 year old bachelor and husbandman of Barlavington (9 months).

Richard and Mary may have had the following children:

    1. Winn Riddel was baptised on 25 December 1779 in Sutton, Sussex.

    2. John Riddel was baptised on 13 January 1782 in Sutton.

  5. Elizabeth Goble may have been a daughter of William and Ann.

Elizabeth married Henry Boxall by banns on 29 October 1772 in Heyshott.  At the time of their marriage Henry Boxal was of Selham, Sussex and Elizabeth of Heyshott.  They both made their X marks.  The witnesses were John Matthews (mark) and Hannah Hopkins (signed).  The banns were published on 27 September, 11 and 18 October 1772 in Heyshott.

Henry and Elizabeth may have had the following children:

    1. John Boxall was baptised on 20 April 1777 in Easebourne, Sussex.

    2. William Boxall was baptised on 28 April 1782 in Selham, Sussex.

    3. Richard Boxall was baptised on 24 October 1784 in Selham.  Was he the Richard Boxall witness to the marriage of his possible cousin Charlotte Goble (1787-?) to James Hilyer in 1808 Easebourne?  Did Richard marry Margaret Tribe on 14 May 1810 in Midhurst?  The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Boxall, Elizabeth Rogers and Elizabeth Boxhall.

    4. James Boxall was baptised on 20 August 1786 in Easebourne.

    5. Mary Boxall was baptised on 11 November 1787 in Easebourne and probably died as an infant.

    6. George Boxall was baptised on 17 May 1789 in Selham.

    7. Mary Boxall was baptised on 10 June 1791 in Easebourne.

    8. Charles Boxall was baptised on 3 March 1793 in Selham.

    9. Thomas Boxall was baptised on 16 March 1794 in Selham.

    10. Charlotte Boxall was baptised on 26 June 1796 in Selham.  (She was not the Charlotte Boxall who married Robert Denyer in 1819.)

  6. Anne Goble was baptised on 1 March 1759 in Selham and buried there on 27 May 1759.

  7. James Goble was baptised on 10 November 1765 in Selham.  He married Hetty Peryer in 1783 Heyshott, Sussex.  (They have their own page.)

John Goble and Mary Cornelius married by licence dated 26 July 1709 and in the Pagham and Tarring Peculiar district.  John was then a widower and Mary a spinster.  They had 2 known sons:

  1. William Goble was baptised on 22 April 1716 in Coates cum Burton, Sussex.

  2. Cornelius Goble was baptised on 21 June 1719 in Coates cum Burton.  He married Elizabeth.  They had the following children:

    1. Cornelious Goble was baptised on 7 January 1744/5 in Haslemere, Surrey or Linchmere, Sussex.

    2. George Gobel was baptised on 8 June 1748 in Linchmere.  He may had married Elizabeth.  They may have had the following child:

      1. Cornelius Goble was baptised on 23 April 1775 in Lancing, Sussex.  He may have married Margaret Clousley on 20 February 1798 in Burpham, at which time they were both of Burpham.

    3. Sarah Gobel was baptised on 21 April 1751 in Linchmere.
