George GOBLE
(1870-?)
and Elizabeth LAMKIN (1872-?)

George Goble and Elizabeth Lamkin married
by banns on 17 May 1891 (Whitsun Day) at the parish church of St. Andrew, Portslade-by-Sea, Sussex. He was then a 20
year old bachelor and labourer and she an 18 year old spinster, and they
were both of Portslade-by-Sea. Their fathers were named as
James Goble and John Lamkin who were both
labourers. The
witnesses to their marriage were John Lamkin and Rose Goble. (They were
not my direct ancestors. George was the nephew of my 2x Great
Grandfather, Edmund Goble.)
George Goble was baptised on 6 November 1870 in Portslade.
He was the son of James
Goble (1843-1896) and
Anne Taylor (1847-?).
When the 1871 census was recorded he was 8 months old and living with his
parents and elder sister at the greengrocers in The Terrace, Fishersgate,
Sussex. In 1881, he was 11 years old and living with his parents and 5
siblings at 6 North Street, Portslade. In 1891 he was the eldest of
his siblings living at home and he was then a 20 year old gas house
labourer.
Elizabeth Lamkin was
baptised on 6 October 1872 in Brighton, Sussex. She was the daughter of
John Lamkin (c1839-?) and Mary Ann. When the 1881 census
was recorded, 9 year old Elizabeth Lamkin was a scholar,
living with her parents and 8 siblings in Church Road, Portslade. Her
father was then a 42 year old labourer and her mother 43 and they were born
in Kent. In 1891, Elizabeth Lamkin was an 18 year old
laundress living at 21 North Street, Portslade with her widower father aged 51, 6 siblings and 2 year old
nephew George T. Lamkin. Her father was then, like her soon to be husband, a
gas labourer. (Note, her surname was consistently spelt Lamkin rather
than Lambkin.)
When the 1901 census was recorded George and Elizabeth were living at 98
North Street, Portslade, along with their 4 children. George was then
a 30 year old greengrocer and Elizabeth was 27.
In 1911 the couple and 8 children were living at 10 Seaford Road, Hove.
George was then a 40 year old greengrocer and Elizabeth was 38.
George Goble
and Elizabeth Lambkin had 9 known children:

George Goble was born about 1893 in Portslade. When the
1901 census was recorded he was 8 years old. In 1911 he was 17
years old and a greengrocer's assistant to his father. George
married Florence.

Elizabeth Goble was born on St. Swithins Day 1895 in Portslade,
and was known as Nell.
She died aged 89 years on 15 April 1985. In 1901 she was 5 years
old. In 1911 she was 15 years old and assisting in her father's
shop.
Elizabeth married Cecil Christian Shorter, also known
as Harry, in the fourth quarter of 1914.
Cecil was born in the fourth quarter of 1891 in Fulham and died on 17
January 1983, aged 91 years.
Harry and Elizabeth had 3 children:

Eileen Phyllis Shorter was born on 2 April 1915 and
died on 4 July 1993. Eileen married Dixie Dean.
They had no children.

Christian Reginald Shorter, also known as
Son, was born in the fourth quarter of 1920 and died on 3
August 1994. Christian married Lilian.

was born in the second quarter of 1923 and died on 11 July 2000.

1997.

Emily Daisy Goble was born in the third quarter of 1898 in Portslade.
She was 2 years old in 1901. The 1911 census records that 12 year
old Daisy Goble was at school. (The photograph on the right is of Emily and has been provided by her
daughter Jean.)
Emily Dasiy married twice, firstly to Charles P.
Shurety in the first quarter of 1919 in the Kensington
registration district.

George and Emily had 1 daughter:

James Albert Goble was born in the second quarter of 1900 in Portslade. He died in 1960.
At the time of the 1901 census he was a year old. In 1911 he was
11 years old and at school.
James married
Dorothy May
Russell.
Dorothy was born on 9 May 1902 and died on 15 April 1989 aged 86 years. She had 3 brothers and a sister,
Alf,
George, William who was killed in 1914 aged 23 years,
and Ede. Dorothy was the daughter of John Russell
and Laura Clara Dawson who in 1914 were living at 2 Leylands
Road, Fishersgate. Dorothy also married Dennis Cliford
Henneberry who died on 12 March 1990 aged 66 years.
Dennis was buried in the Portslade cemetery along with his wife
Dorothy Henneberry nee Goble. He was
born on 23 November 1923.
James and Dorothy had 4 children:

fourth quarter of 1925 and died on 26 December 2003.

quarter of 1930 and died on 12 March 1987.

1901 in Portslade. She was 9 years old in 1911. Edith

Louise Goble was born in the fourth quarter 1902 in Portslade.
When the 1911 census was recorded she was 8 years old.
Ivy married her cousin George Goble (1902-?). He was the
son of George Goble (1878-?) and
Ada Hobden (1881-?).

Hubert Goble, also known as Bert,
was born on 7 May 1904 in Portslade and died on 4 December 1974
at 5 North Street, Portslade-on-Sea. His son Hubert register the
death. He owned the Greengrocers at 37 North Street, Portslade, which as a child and teenager my mum (Eileen Tullett) remembers shopping in
from time to time. The 1911 census records that he was 6 year
old Bertie Goble.
Hubert married
Dorothy Smith on 27 June 1923 at the register office in the
Steyning registration district. The were both then 21 years old
and both single. Hubert was a greengrocer of 1 Seaford Road, Hove
and Dorothy was a laundry assistant of 27 Sheldale Road, Portslade.
Their fathers were named as George Goble a greengrocer
and John Smith a labourer. The witnesses to their
marriage were Daisy Shurety and Sarah Goble.
Dorothy was born on 29 August 1903 in 40 Wolseley Road, Portslade.
She died on 12 October 1973 at 5 North Street, Portslade-by-Sea.

Hubert George Goble, also known as George,
was born on 29 October 1923 at 13 Ellen Street, Portslade. His
father was then a greengrocer (hawker) and his mother registered his
birth on 12 December 1923.
George married Peggy Eileen Cheesman on 14 May
1951.
Peggy Eileen Cheeseman was born on 30 August 1926
at 9 Fernbrook Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, the daughter of
William Gilbert Cheeseman an Annie Dillon.
At the time of her birth, her father was a coal carman and her
mother registered her birth on 24 September 1926.
