George GOBLE (1870-?)

and Elizabeth LAMKIN (1872-?)

George Goble and Elizabeth Lamkin married by banns on 17 May 1891 (Whitsun Day) at the parish church of St. Andrew, Portslade-by-Sea, Sussex.  He was then a 20 year old bachelor and labourer and she an 18 year old spinster, and they were both of Portslade-by-Sea.  Their fathers were named as James Goble and John Lamkin who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Lamkin and Rose Goble.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  George was the nephew of my 2x Great Grandfather, Edmund Goble.)

George Goble was baptised on 6 November 1870 in Portslade.  He was the son of James Goble (1843-1896) and Anne Taylor (1847-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded he was 8 months old and living with his parents and elder sister at the greengrocers in The Terrace, Fishersgate, Sussex.  In 1881, he was 11 years old and living with his parents and 5 siblings at 6 North Street, Portslade.  In 1891 he was the eldest of his siblings living at home and he was then a 20 year old gas house labourer.

Elizabeth Lamkin was baptised on 6 October 1872 in Brighton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Lamkin (c1839-?) and Mary Ann.  When the 1881 census was recorded, 9 year old Elizabeth Lamkin was a scholar, living with her parents and 8 siblings in Church Road, Portslade.  Her father was then a 42 year old labourer and her mother 43 and they were born in Kent.  In 1891, Elizabeth Lamkin was an 18 year old laundress living at 21 North Street, Portslade with her widower father aged 51, 6 siblings and 2 year old nephew George T. Lamkin.  Her father was then, like her soon to be husband, a gas labourer.  (Note, her surname was consistently spelt Lamkin rather than Lambkin.)

When the 1901 census was recorded George and Elizabeth were living at 98 North Street, Portslade, along with their 4 children.  George was then a 30 year old greengrocer and Elizabeth was 27.

In 1911 the couple and 8 children were living at 10 Seaford Road, Hove.  George was then a 40 year old greengrocer and Elizabeth was 38.
