Edmund GOBLE (1862-1946)

and Mary Ann BROWNING (1870-1938)

Edmund Goble and Mary Ann Browning married in the fourth quarter of 1891 in the Steyning, Sussex registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Edmund was the the brother of me Great Grandmother, Emma Charlotte Goble.)

Edmund Goble was born in the second quarter of 1862 in Fareham, Hampshire.  He was baptised at the age of 7 years on 30 July 1869 in Portslade, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 30 Edmund Goble (c1841-1911) and Lydia Pearson (1837-1899).  Edmund died aged 83 years on 12 March 1946.

Mary Ann Browning was baptised on 26 March 1870 in Portslade.  She was the daughter of Henry Browning (1847-?) and Mary Peters.  Mary Ann died aged 68 years on 11 April 1938.

In 1901 Edmund was a brickmaker and the family were living at 21 Elm Road, Portslade.  By 1911 the couple and their 5 children (Matthew, Mary Ann Kate, David Henry, Edmund James and Henry Roberts Bulling) were living at 59 Wolseley Road, Southern Cross, Portslade and Edmund was a 48 year old gardener.  Mary Ann was then 41 and the census noted they had been married 19 years.

Edmund Goble and Mary Ann Browning had 5 known children:

  1. Matthew Goble was born in 1892 in Fishersgate, Sussex and killed in action on 22 July 1916 on the Somme in France, aged 24 years.  The CWGC web site records that he was the son of Edward and Mary A. Goble of 59 Wolseley Road, Portslade.  At the time of his death he was a Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).  He was buried in the Caterpiller Valley Cemetery in Longueval, France.  When the 1911 census was recorded he was an 18 year old gardener living with his parents.

  2. Mary Ann Kate Goble was born on 10 January 1894 and baptised on 6 May 1894 at St. Andrews, Portslade.  In 1911 she was a 17 year old packer in the laundry.

  3. David Henry Goble was born on 14 September 1895 and baptised on 6 March 1898 at St. Andrews, Portslade.  He died on 28 April 1922.  In 1911 he was a 15 year old domestic page boy.

  4. Edmund Thomas Goble was born on 11 December 1897 and baptised on 6 March 1898 at St. Andrews, Portslade.  He was a 13 year old scholar in 1911.
