Daniel GOACHER (1749-1824)

and Elizabeth KNIGHT (?-1805)

Daniel Goacher and Elizabeth Knight married by banns on 22 August 1773 in Shipley, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Brooks and William Killick.  (The were not my direct ancestors.)

Daniel Gocher was born about 1749.  He died aged 75 years and was buried on 29 June 1824 in Shipley.  Several databases at Ancestry.co.uk give his parent's names as Thomas Goacher and Elizabeth Tilly and a few say he was born in West Chiltington, but none seem to give any proof of this, nor have I found a baptism for him in the the IGI.  From the National Archives website I have gleaned that a Daniel Goacher was the executor of the 1817 will of his sister Catherine West, a widow from Horsham.  Katherine Goacher married Samuel West by licence on 17 March 1772 in Shipley and the witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Goacher and Daniel Goacher.

Elizabeth Knight's dated and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 5 April 1805 in Shipley, Sussex.  The burial register noted she was the wife of Daniel Gocher.

William married Philadelphia Dean by banns on 8 June 1809 in Shipley.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Gocher and Sarah Parker.

Philadelphia was baptised on 15 June 1787 in Angmering, Sussex and was the daughter of John Dean and Sarah Standen.  She died aged 52 years and was buried on 6 December 1838 in Shipley, by the name of Philadelphia Goatcher.

At the time of the 1841 census, William was said to be a 60 year old farmer and he was living at Sauceland in Shipley.  With him on census night was 23 year old housekeeper Mary Streeter, sons James and Thomas, 5 year old Sarah Streeter, 1 year old Elizabeth Blunt Streeter and 14 year old servant Mary Johnson.
