William GIBSON (1672-1744)

and Mary DOUST (c1675-?)

 

William Gibson and Mary Doust were my 7x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 28 May 1700 in Battle, Sussex.  He was then of Hooe, Sussex, and she of the parish of All Saints in Hastings, Sussex.

William Gibson was baptised on 8 December 1672 in Warbleton, Sussex.  He was the son of 5 205 John Gibson (c1635-1683) and 5 205 Elizabeth Isted (1635-1681).  He may have died in Bexhill, Sussex and have been buried on 5 September 1744 in Hooe.

Mary Doustís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  I would guess she was born sometime between 1668 and 1684.  See below for a list of possible parents.

 

William Gibson and Mary Doust had 7 known children:

  1. John Gibson was baptised on 29 September 1700 in Warbleton and buried on 19 July 1720.  The burial register records that he was the son of William and Mary.

  2. William Gibson was baptised on 20 September 1702 in Hooe, Sussex.

    William married Jane West on 1 October 1730 in Ninfield, Sussex.

    William and Jane had 2 known children:

    1. John Gibson was baptised on 7 February 1729/30 in Hooe.

    2. Sarah Gibson was baptised on 10 June 1733 in Hooe.

  3. Joseph Gibson was baptised on 5 March 1703/4 in Hooe.  He was buried on 4 November 1775 in Hooe.

    Joseph married Sarah Rimington on 4 May 1731 in Ninfield, Sussex.

    Sarah was baptised on 19 October 1707, Hellingly, Sussex, and was the daughter of Alexander Rimington and Elizabeth Brazier.  She was buried on 23 February 1760 in Hooe and the burial register recorded that she was the wife of Joseph Gibson.

    Joseph and Sarah had 4 known children:

    1. Joseph Gibson was baptised on 25 July 1731 in Hooe.  He was buried on 29 June 1738 in Hooe and the burial register recorded that he was the son of Joseph and Sarah.

    2. Sarah Gibson was baptised on 17 November 1734 in Hooe.

    3. William Gibson was baptised on 17 November 1734  in Ninfield.  He was buried on 7 August 1737 in Hooe and the burial register recorded that he was the son of Joseph and Sarah.

    4. Samuel Gibson was baptised on 24 January 1735/6 in Ninfield.  He may have been the father of an illegitimate daughter by Fanny Hoad:

      1. Fanny Gipson Hoad was buried on 27 July 1756 in Ashburnham.

      As Samuel Gipson he married Elizabeth Harrison by banns on 13 September 1760 in Hooe.  He was then a bachelor of Hooe and she a spinster of Ninfield.  Samuel signed his name and Elizabeth made her mark.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Russel and Richard Marchant.  They were married by the curate, Joseph Wise.  The banns were published in Hooe on 20, 27 April and 4 May 1760.

      Samuel and Elizabeth had 2 known children:

      1. Sarah Gibson was baptised on 23 April 1761 in Hooe.

      2. Thomas Gibson was baptised on 30 August 1763 in Hooe.

        Thomas may have married Sarah Taylor by banns on 21 October 1784 in Hooe.  They were both then of Hooe.  Thomas signed his name and Sarah made her mark.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Backshell (signed) and John Ockenden (marked).  They were married by the curate, Alexander Lunan.  The banns were published on 15, 22 August and 5 September 1784 in Hooe.

        Or he may have married Sarah Collins by banns on 13 February 1787 in Hooe.  He was then a bachelor of Ashburnham and she a spinster of Hooe.  Thomas signed his name and Sarah made her mark.  They were married by the curate Thomas Barton.  The witnesses to the marriage were John Isted and Mary Colbran who both signed their names.  The banns were published in Hooe on 28 January, 4 and 11 February 1787.

  4. Elizabeth Gibson was baptised on 7 December 1707 in Hooe.  Her mother's name was recorded as Elizabeth in the baptism register.

  5. Thomas Gibson, my 6x Great Grandfather was baptised on 9 July 1710 in Hooe.  He married 5 154 Ann Wenham in 1735.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Mary Gibson was baptised on 22 May 1713 in Hooe.

  7. Samuel Gibson was baptised on 20 January 1713/4 in Hooe.  He may have been buried on 2 February 1789 in Hooe and the burial register recorded that he was a pauper.  Or he may have been buried on 5 September 1800 in Hooe, but the burial register records that that Samuel died aged 80 years.

    Samuel married Ann Gatfield by licence on 20 January 1736/7 in Wartling, Sussex.  He was then of Hooe and she of Ashburnham, Sussex.

 

 

Possible parents of Mary Doust:

  1. John Doust married Elizabeth Cook, widow, on 9 August 1660 in Bexhill.  Elizabeth wife of John Doust was buried in Bexhill on 28 January 1661/2.  John may have been baptised on 6 January 1622/3 in Crowhurst and have been the son of Arthur Doust.

    John was the father of:

    1. John Doust was buried on 6 March 1662/3 in Bexhill.

    John Doust married Margaret Fuller, widow, on 19 July 1668 in Bexhill, Sussex.  A John Doust was buried in Bexhill on 25 December 1669.  A transcript of the Bexhill registers notes that Margaret Rouse was buried on 24 August 1670.

  2. Robert Doust married Sarah Barton on 23 November 1660 in Bexhill.

    A Robert Doust was buried on 27 June 1680 in Bexhill.  Robert may have been baptised on 13 October 1633 in Crowhurst and have been the son of Arthur Doust.  Or he may have been baptised on 7 December 1636 in Bexhill and have been the son of John Doust.

    Sarah wife of Robert Doust was buried on 4 March 1668/9 in Bexhill.

    Robert and Sarah had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Doust was baptised on 8 February 1660/1 in Bexhill and buried there as an infant on 15 March 1660/1.

    2. Thomas Doust was baptised on 8 May 1664 in Bexhill and buried there on 10 August 1667.

    3. Joanne Doust was baptised on 20 January 1665/6 in Bexhill and buried there on 19 May 1667.

    4. Mary Doust was baptised on 1 March 1667/8 in Bexhill and buried there on 10 July 1670.

  3. Robert Doust and Joane married before or about 1675.  They may have married as Robert Dower and Joan Frankwell on 22 June 1675 in Bexhill.

    Jone Doust was buried on 7 December 1681 in Bexhill.

    1. Mary Doust was baptised on 19 March 1675/6 in Bexhill.

    2. Ann Doust was baptised on 9 December 1677 in Bexhill.

  4. George Doust married Ann before or about 1669.

    George may have been baptised on 6 October 1636 in Crowhurst and have been the son of Arthur Doust.  A George Doust was buried in Hooe on 6 April 1690.

    Ann wife of George Doust was buried on 1 February 1689/90 in Hooe.

    George and Ann had the following children:

    1. Thomas Doust was baptised on 8 August 1669 in Hooe.

    2. George Dust was baptised on 19 November 1671 in Hooe.

    3. Ann Doust was baptised on 10 January 1674/5 in Hooe.  She married Henry Wimshurst on 5 January 1692/3 in Hooe.

    4. Edward Doust was baptised on 14 October 1677 in Hooe and buried there on 22 April 1679.

  5. Thomas Doust married Mary Saggett on 25 July 1671 in Brede, Sussex.

    A Thomas Doust was buried on 22 June 1681 in Brede.

    Thomas and Mary had the following children:

    1. John Doust was baptised on 11 June 1672 in Brede.

    2. Thomas Doust was baptised on 21 February 1674/5 in Brede.

    3. Robert Doust was baptised on 13 June 1677 in Brede.  He may have been buried on 27 December 1685 in Brede.

  6. Stephen Doust married Frances Miller on 19 November 1671 in Hooe, Sussex.

    A Stephen Doust was buried on 13 October 1715 in Hooe.  Frances wife of Stephen Doust was buried on 10 July 1697 in Hooe.

    They have had the following children:

    1. A still born child of Stephen Doust was buried on 8 April 1679 in Hooe.

    2. Stephen Doust married Ann White on 25 November 1697 in Hooe.  They were both of Hooe.

 

Sarah Doust was buried on 29 May 1671 in Bexhill.

Elizabeth Dost was buried on 3 April 1679 in Hooe.

Nicholas Dous was buried on 10 December 1686 in Bexhill.

Mary Doust was buried on 6 April 1704 in Bexhill.

 

Possible Grandparents or Great Grandparents:

Nicholas Dust and Margaret Horshall married on 23 October 1592 in Ashburnham.

Anthony Dust and Alice Fawkner married on 5 November 1593 in Waldron.  He may also have married Joan Cole on 5 November 1598 in Waldron.

Richard Douste and Joan Cruttenden married on 14 January 1593/4 in Burwash.

 

Symon Douste had the following children:

  1. Helene Douste was baptised on 29 January 1594 in Crowhurst.  Helen Doust married Thomas Dean on 14 May 1615 in Crowhurst.

  2. John Douste was baptised on 17 June 1599 in Crowhurst.  A John Dowst married Joan Hollis on 1 June 1629 in Ninfield.

  3. Susanna Doust was baptised on 5 April 1602 in Crowhurst.  Susan Doust married William Bene on 10 December 1626 in Ashburnham.

  4. Simeon Dowst was baptised on 6 April 1605 in Crowhurst.  As Simon Doust he may have married Rachel Bankham on 25 February 1627/8 at St. Clements, Hastings.

 

Stephen Doust may have married before or about 1592 in or near Crowhurst.  (He has his own page.)

 

Henry Dowse and Mary Cooleman married on 25 May 1612 in Hooe.  Henry and Mary had the following child:

  1. George Dowse was baptised on 10 March 1613/4 in Hooe.  (The IGI says it was Mary who was baptised.)

 

Henry Douse and Agnes Hatcher married on 11 August 1618 in Winchelsea.

Henry had the following child:

  1. Judith Douse was baptised on 28 February 1618/9 in Winchelsea.

 

Gideon Dowse and Alice Sapson married on 24 April 1620 in Rye.

Stephen Douste and Jane Mylls married on 20 November 1620 in Fairlight.

Simon Doust and Rachel Bankham married on 25 February 1627/8 at St. Clements, Hastings.

 

John Dowst and Joan Hollis married on 1 June 1629 in Ninfield.

John and Joan may have had the following children:

  1. John Doust alias Sweet was baptised on 5 February 1633/4 in Bexhill.

  2. Robert Doust was baptised on 7 December 1636 in Bexhill.

 

Arthur Doust and Frances Paine married on 15 January 1635/6 in Crowhurst.  (They have their own page.)

 

 

Sarah Gibson was buried on 13 June 1730 in Hooe.

Sarah Gibson of Ninfield was buried on 11 October 1734 in Hooe.

Sarah Gibson was buried on 17 May 1761 in Hooe.

Elizabeth Gibson aged 80 years was buried on 15 November 1804 in Hooe.
