John GIBSON (c1635-1684)

and Elizabeth ISTED (1635-1681)

John Gibson and Elizabeth Isted were my 8x Great Grandparents.  They married on 12 November 1661 in Warbleton, Sussex.

John Gibson’s date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was buried on 28 January 1683/4 in Warbleton and it was noted in the burial register that John Gibson was a widower.

Elizabeth Isted may have been baptised in January 1635/6 in Warbleton.  If so, then she was the daughter of Thomas Isted  (c1610-?) and Margaret Crouch.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  The Warbleton burial register records that Elizabeth wife of John Gibson was buried on 31 May 1681.

John Gibson and Elizabeth Isted had 8 known children:

1. John Gibson was baptised on 8 November 1663 in Warbleton.

2. Sarah Gibson was baptised on 29 June 1670 in Warbleton.

   Sarah married Samuel Birchet or Burchett on 21 April 1696 in Warbleton.

   Samuel and Sarah had 2 known children:

   1. Samuel Birchet was baptised on 23 June 1700 in Warbleton.  A Saml Birchett was buried on 14 July 1748 in Warbleton.

   2. Richard Burchet was baptised on 10 December 1708 in Warbleton.  He died in 1769.  As Richard Burchat he married Mary Ride of Ewhurst, on 20 November 1728 in Rudgwick, Sussex.

3. Thomas Gibson was baptised on 29 June 1670 in Warbleton.

   Thomas married Elizabeth Baker on 12 March 1686/7 in Warbleton.

   Elizabeth wife of Thomas Gibson was buried on 10 June 1710 in Warbleton.

   Thomas and Elizabeth had 2 known children:

   1. Elizabeth Gibson was baptised on 6 May 1689 in Warbleton.

   2. Mary Gibson was baptised on 15 March 1695/6 in Warbleton.

4. Elizabeth Gibson was baptised on 29 June 1670 in Warbleton.

5. William Gibson, my 7x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 8 December 1672 in Warbleton.  He married Mary Doust.  (They have their own page.)

6. Mary Gibson was baptised on 6 September 1678 in Warbleton.

7. Mary Gibson was baptised on 13 January 1679/80 in Warbleton.

8. Anne Gibson was baptised on 13 January 1679/80 in Warbleton.  An Ann Gibson was buried on 22 July 1737 in Ashburnham.

The following male Gibsons married between 1600 and 1640:

William Gibson or Gibsonne married Eleanor Gardiner by licence on 24 September 1640 in Framfield, Sussex.  He was a Cordwainer of East Hoathly, Sussex and she a Widow of Ringmer, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 21 September 1640 in South Malling Peculiar.  Surety was given by William himself and Stephen Willard a Butcher of Chiddingly.

John Gibson married Ann Hunt by licence on 23 July 1640 in Bodiam, Sussex.  He was a Clerk of Ticehurst and she a widow also of Ticehurst.  Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 21 July 1640.  Surety was provided by John himself and Thomas Burkin a Locksmith of Lewes.

Thomas Gibson married Cicely Gouldinge on 25 May 1637 in Bodiam.

A marriage licence was issued on 6 December 1636 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes for the marriage of Edward Gibson and Mary Jacket a spinster of Brighton, Sussex.  However, it would seem Edward Gibsonn had married Mary Jacket, widow on 3 December 1621 in Brighton, at which time they were both of Brighton.

Robert Gibson married Agnes Dunnige on 4 September 1636 in Kirdford, Sussex.  He may have previously married Mary Chalke on 1 September 1630 in Kirdford.

They may have had the following children:

1. John Gibson was baptised on 13 September 1635 in Kirdford.

John Gibson married Tamsin Talmy on 11 October 1635/6 in Fittleworth.

They may have had the following children:

1. John Gibson was baptised on 26 April 1639 in Fittleworth.

Richard Gybson married Margaret Norman by licence on 5 May 1627 in St. Anne's in Lewes.  He was a yeoman of Hartfield and she a spinster of East Grinstead.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  Surety for the licence was stood by Richard himself and Robert Saxpes a yeoman of Hartfield.

John Gibson married Frances Bedo on 26 June 1626 in Hartfield.

John Gibson married Constance Browne on 24 February 1624/5 at St. Clements in Hastings, Sussex.

Richard Gibson married Joan Greenfield on 14 May 1623 in Pulborough, Sussex.

They had the following children:

1. Joan Gibson was baptised on 7 November 1623 in Pulborough.

2. Sarah Gibson was baptised on 20 November 1625 in Pulborough.

3. Mary Gibson was baptised on 13 March 1627/8 in Pulborough.

4. John Gibson was baptised on 28 August 1631 in Pulborough.

Gregory Gibsone married Susan Robinson on 2 October 1618 in Kirdford.

Edward Gibson married Elizabeth Kilner of Hastings on 17 February 1613/4 in Ore, Sussex.

Edward Gibsonn married Joan Tull on 14 November 1611 in Brighton.  He may have previously married Agnes Freeman on 14 November 1608 in Brighton.

They may have had the following children:

1. John Gibsonn was baptised on 29 September 1616 in Brighton.

2. John Gibsonn was baptised on 20 December 1619 in Brighton.

Thomas Gibson married Jane Cowlman on 10 December 1604 in Rye, Sussex.

A marriage licence was issued on 2 May 1603 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes for the marriage of Richard Gibson of Marden, Kent and Susan Newington a Spinster of Ripe.  Surety was given by Richard himself and Susan's brother Thomas Newington a husbandman of Ripe.

A marriage licence was issued on 7 August 1601 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester for the marriage of John Gibson and Elizabeth Lockyer, who were both of Woolbeding.

John Gibson married Dorothy Strudwick on 25 June 1600 in Kirdford.
