and Eliza POWELL (?-?)
and Sarah COPELAND (c1802-1848)
and Emma Sarah PLOWMAN (c1830-1857)
and Elizabeth (c1798-1869)
and Martha (c1821-?)
David Gathern may have married 5 times. (He nor his wives were
my direct ancestors, but he was the 3x Great Grandfather of my cousins.)
He may have first married Eliza Powell on 29 August 1825 at St. James
in Westminster. He then married Sarah Copeland on 15 January
1829 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. Next he married
Emma Sarah Plowman on 25 December 1850 in Broadwater, Sussex.
His father's name was then recorded as John Gathern. (The death
of a John Gathern was registered in the first quarter of 1839 in the
Hertford registration district.) David married again in the
fourth quarter of 1859 in the Worthing registration district to Elizabeth
Pannell. And finally he married Martha.
David Gathern was born about 1800-5 in Middlesex. He died aged
87 years in the Shoreham workhouse on 1 August 1889 and was buried in
Shoreham on 6 August 1889. David was a book binder. The 1881
census records that he was born in Sheffield. He was then an 81 year
old widower living with his married daughter Mary Ann at 3 Kensington
Street in Brighton.
Sarah Copeland's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
The death of Sarah Gathern was registered in the fourth quarter of
1848 in the Worthing registration district.
Emma Sarah Plowman was born about 1830 in Worthing, Sussex. She
was the daughter of Edward Plowman and Emma Cuddington.
The death of Emma Gathern was registered in the third quarter of 1857
in the Worthing registration district.
Elizabeth was born about 1797 in Pagham, Sussex. The death of
71 year old Elizabeth Gathern was registered in the second quarter of
1869 in the Worthing registration district.
Martha was born about 1821 in Broadwater.
When the 1841 census was recorded, the family were living at Posthills
(think that's the name) in Bengeo, Hertfordshire. David was then a
book binder and he and Sarah were both aged 39 years. In 1851 the
family were living at 23 Marine Place in Broadwater. David was a 46
year old book binder, and Emma was 21 years old. The 1861 census
records that David was a 60 year old book binder living at 12 Chapel Street
in Broadwater, along with his 64 year old wife, 3 young children, his 28
year old unmarried daughter-in-law Eliza Pannell who was a dressmaker
and a 9 year old grandson Albert Pannell. (He was baptised on
22 February 1852 at St. Paul in Chichester as Albert Secondus Boniface
Pannell the son of Eliza Pannell.) In 1871 David was still
a book binder and he was then said to be 63 years old. He was then
living at 24 Newlands Road in Broadwater along with his 50 year old wife
Martha and daughter Mary Ann.
