Albert Thomas GATHERN (1867-?)

and Eliza Caroline AKEHURST (1873-?)

 

Albert Thomas Gathern and Eliza Caroline Akehurst  married on 6 June 1892 at St. Andrews in Portslade, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors, but they were the Great Grandparents of my cousins.)

Albert Thomas Gathern was baptised on 22 September 1867 in Southwick, Sussex.  He was the son of James Gathern (1840-?) and Charlotte Hemsley (1843-?).  The 1871 census records that he was 3 years old and living with his mother and elder sister at May's Terrace in Southwick.  His father was not at home on census night in 1871 and was probably away at sea.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was living with his parents and siblings at 11 George Street in Southwick and he was then 13 years old.

Eliza Caroline Akehurst was baptised on 7 October 1873 in Portslade.  She was the daughter of Samuel Akehurst (1839-1896) and Eliza Pumphrey (1840-1902).  She was 7 years old when the 1881 census was recorded.  In 1891 she was a 17 year old domestic servant.

In 1901 the family were living at 13 St. James Square in Portslade and Albert was a 33 year old labourer.

 

Albert Thomas Gathern and Eliza Caroline Akehurst had 7 known children:

  1. Lionel Albert Gathern was born on 4 July 1892 and baptised at the parish church of St. Andrews in Portslade on 4 September 1892.  The 1901 census records that he was 9 year old Albert Gathern.

  2. David William Gathern was born on 5 February 1895 and baptised on 2 June 1895 at St. Andrews in Portslade.  At that time the family were living at 9 St. James Square in Portslade.  He married Violet Beatrice Bashford in 1919.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Alfred Thomas Gathern was born in 1897 in Portslade.  In 1901 he was 4 years old.  He married Violet Minnie.

  4. Annie Gathern was born in 1900 in Portslade.  She was 10 months old when the 1901 census was recorded.

  5. Harry Gathern was born in the fourth quarter of 1902.

  6. Minnie Henrietta Gathern was born on 7 January 1905 and baptised on 5 November 1905 in Portslade.

  7. James Frederick Gathern was born on 1 July 1910 and baptised on 7 August 1910 at St. Andrews in Portslade.  He died on 20 April 1983.  James married Doris Tester on 1 August 1936.
