Thomas FRENCH (1618-1673)

and Joan DURRANT (1613-1657)

and Lucy WILLCOCK (c1635-?)

 

Thomas French and Lucy Willcock may have been my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 18 February 1657/8 in Heathfield, Sussex.  He was then described as a husbandman and they were both of Warbleton, Sussex.  The banns were published at Hailsham, Sussex and they also mentioned that Thomas was a husbandman and that they were both of Warbleton.  Thomas may have previously married Joan Durrant on 4 February 1644/5 in Warbleton.  He was then a bachelor of Warbleton and she a spinster of Heathfield.

Thomas French's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was probably buried on 27 September 1673 in Warbleton.  It has been suggested that he was baptised on 23 March 1627 in Chiddingly, Sussex, the son of John French (1589-1630) and Anne Sackville.  That Thomas was named in his father's will and he most probably married Elizabeth Woode on 28 March 1654 in Chiddingly.  If "our" Thomas first married in 1644, then I expect he would have been born before 1623.  I have checked a transcript of the Warbleton baptism registers and there were no Frenches baptised there between 1600 and 1625.  I have also checked a transcript of the Heathfield baptism register from 1613 to 1625 and Thomas was not baptised there.  Might he have been baptised on 25 January 1617/8 in Dallington, Sussex and have been the son of Ralf French?

Joan Durrant may have been baptised on 2 January 1613/4 in Warbleton and have been the daughter of John Durrant.  The Warbleton burial register records that the wife of Thomas French was buried on 15 April 1657.

Lucy Willcock's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

Thomas French and Joan Durrant had 1 known son:

  1. John French was baptised on 1 November 1646 in Warbleton.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

 

Thomas French and Lucy Willcock had 5 known children:

  1. Mary French was baptised on 26 December 1658 in Warbleton.  A Mary French was buried in Warbleton on 28 February 1695.  Another Mary French was baptised on 1 February 1651/2 in Warbleton.

  2. Thomas French was baptised on 17 February 1661/2 in Warbleton.  He may have been buried on 20 January 1686/7 in Warbleton.  The burial register records that Thomas French was a single man.

  3. Samuel French, my possible 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 6 September 1665 in Warbleton.  He married Mary Baldock in 1691.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Lucie French was baptised on 19 July 1669 in Warbleton and buried there as an infant on 19 August 1670.

  5. William French was baptised in November 1672 in Warbleton.  He died in 1697.

 

 

The wife of Thomas French was buried on 15 September 1666 in Heathfield.

Thomas French and Elianor Sevenock married on 20 November 1666 in Heathfield.  I would think this Thomas was born about 1640ish.  He may have been buried on 27 May 1700 in Heathfield.

Thomas and Eleanor had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth French was baptised on 26 November 1667 in Heathfield, the daughter of Thomas French.

  2. Thomas French was baptised on 23 October 1669 in Heathfield, the son of Thomas French and Eleanor his wife.  A child of Thomas French was buried on 5 April 1670 in Heathfield, but unfortunately the burial register does not name the child.

  3. Daniel French was baptised on 5 March 1670/1 in Heathfield, the son of Thomas French by Ellen his wife.

  4. Priscilla French was baptised on 29 October 1672 in Heathfield, the daughter of Thomas French by Eleanor his wife.

 

Daniel French married Ann Turner on 23 June 1663 in Heathfield.  They were both of Brightling.  Given that Thomas and Eleanor named a son Daniel, might Thomas and Daniel have been brothers?

Daniel and Ann had 1 known son:

  1. Thomas French was baptised on 21 August 1664 in Heathfield, the son of Daniel French.

 

John French and Elizabeth Waters married on 14 May 1614 in Heathfield. 

Jhon French was buried on 15 February 1631/2 in Heathfield.

John and Elizabeth may have had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth Frenche was baptised on 20 April 1615 in Heathfield, the daughter of John Frenche.

  2. El----- French was baptised on 23 March 1616/7 in Heathfield, the daughter of John French the collier.

  3. John French was baptised on 9 May 1619 in Heathfield, the son of John French, junior.

  4. William French was baptised on 31 September 1621 in Heathfield, the son of Jhon French.

  5. Richard French was baptised on 14 October 1624 in Heathfield, the son of John French.

  6. Elizabeth or Priscilla French was baptised on 25 November 1627 in Heathfield the daughter of John French.  (Elizabeth was crossed out and Priscilla inserted into the baptism register.)

  7. Daniell French was baptised on 14 November 1630 in Heathfield, the son of Jhon French.
