John FRENCH (1755-1838)

and Catherine LAVENDER (1759-1833)

 

John French and Catherine Lavender married by banns on 11 July 1783 in Mayfield, Sussex.  They were both of Mayfield.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John French may have been born in or near Chiddingly, Sussex in about 1755.  Did he die aged 83 years in 1838 in Littlington, Sussex?

A John French was baptised on 7 September 1755 in Ticehurst, Sussex, the son of John French and Elizabeth Apps.  On 6 March 1756, a settlement certificate was issued to John French, his wife Elizabeth and 6 month old son John, by the overseers of Wadhurst to Ticehurst, or vice versa.  A John French, cordwainer of Ticehurst left a will proved on 29 December 1803, and yet another John French cordwainer of Ticehurst left a will proved on 12 February 1818.  Could they have been the one born there in 1755 and his father?

Catherine Lavender may have been baptised on 11 March 1759 in Heathfield, Sussex, and have been the daughter of John Lavender and Susanna Bellchamber.  Did she die aged 75 in 1833 in Chiddingly?

 

John French and Catherine Lavender had 9 known children:

  1. Philadelphia French was baptised on 15 February 1784 in Mayfield.

  2. Catherine French was baptised on 29 May 1785 in Mayfield.

  3. William French was born on 18 January 1787 and baptised on 25 March 1787 in Chiddingly.  He may have died in 1846 in Hailsham.  William married Lucy Baulcombe on 7 October 1806 in Wilmington.

  4. Samuel French was born on 8 May 1789 and baptised on 18 June 1789 in Chiddingly.  He may have died in 1851.  Samuel married Harriet Levett by banns on 20 May 1811 in Westham, Sussex.  Samuel was then of Alfriston and Harriet of Westham.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Comstick and John Christian.

  5. Thomas French was born on 9 August 1791 and baptised on 19 February 1792 in Chiddingly.  Thomas may have died in 1858 in Alfriston.

    Thomas married twice, firstly married Charlotte Levette on 16 April 1814 in Wilmington, Sussex.

    Charlotte was born about 1792 in Wilmington and buried there in 1815.

    As a widower from Tarring Neville, Thomas married Caroline Trigwell by licence on 30 June 1827 in Ringmer.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that she was a spinster of Ringmer and married with consent.

    Caroline was baptised on 23 October 1808 in Ringmer, Sussex and was the daughter of Isaac Trigwell (1773-1838) and Elizabeth Clarke (1773-1828).

  6. John French was born on 16 February 1794 and baptised on 19 July 1794 in Chiddingly.

  7. Elizabeth French was born on 18 August 1796 and baptised on 2 November 1796 in Chiddingly.

  8. Henry French was born on 25 May 1798 and baptised on 11 January 1801 in Chiddingly.

  9. Ann French was baptised in May 1802 in Chiddingly.

 

FRENCH
