John FRENCH
(1589-1630)
and Anne SACKVILLE (c1600-?)

John French
and
Anne Sackville
married on 12 September
1620.
John French
was born on 7 September 1589 in Chiddingly, Sussex. He was the son
of Stephen French (c1555-1606) and
Barbara Fowle
(c1560-?). John
died on 13 January 1630/1. He was 17 years, 5 months and 14 days old
when an inquisition post mortem was undertaken on 21 January 1607 as to the
lands and property held by his father. He was a gent of Stream House in Chiddingly
and of Estons in Framfield. He left a will dated 23 December 1630,
which was proved on 29 January 1630/1 (ref Lewes A28, 137). An
inquisition post mortem was undertaken in June 1631.
Ann Sackville's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She was the
daughter of John Sackville of Sedlescombe and Jane Downton. The will of
a John Sackville of Chiddingly was proved on 9 May 1593 (PROB 11/81).
Ann married for a second time to Sir Robert Forster of Battle and
Egham on 22 September 1631 by licence.
John French and
Anne Sackville had 3 known children:

Stephen French
was baptised on 7 May 1623 in Chiddingly. He died on 23 June 1666 in
his 44th year and was buried in the Chancel of Chiddingly church. His
will was proved on 16 July 1666, in which he was described as a gentleman
of Chiddingly (PROB 11/321). He was aged 7 years and 8 months at the
time of his father's inquisition post mortem. Stephen was an iron
master. Stephen married
Susanna Foster. Susanna was baptised on 10
December 1618 in Eastbourne and was the daughter of Sir Robert Foster, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Elizabeth
daughter of Sir Edward Burton. Susan died aged 76 years on 10
March 1695 and was buried in the Chancel of Chiddingly church. Stephen and Susan had the following children:

John French
was of Wadham College, Oxford. He died there as a student in 1667
and was buried in the College Chapel. John was named in his
father's will.

Anne French
was named on her father's monument inscription. She died on 19
January 1697 and was buried in the Chancel of Chiddingly church.
Anne married Thomas Broomfield, Esq., of Lewes. He died aged 73 years on 21 January 1710 and was buried
in the Chancel of Chiddingly church. They had the following child:

Bromfield was the eldest son of Thomas and Anne. He died
aged 52 years on 11 November 1719 and was buried in Chiddingly church.

Elizabeth
French was born in 1646. She died unmarried aged 72 years on 10
September 1718 and was buried in Chiddingly church.

Mary French
was named on her father's monument inscription. She died unmarried on 10 March
1695/6 and was buried in Chiddingly.

Susan French
died aged 56 years on 21 June 1709.

Charity French
died aged 40 years on 13 January and was buried on 23 January 1696/7 in
the parish of St. Anne's in Lewes. She married Thomas Newdigate,
Esq., of Lewes and Hawton, Nottinghamshire, as his first wife. He
died in 1722/3.

Katherine
French died without issue before her father and was buried in Chiddingly.

John French
was baptised on 30 April 1626 in Chiddingly. He died in 1648.
His will was proved on 23 November 1648, in which he was described as a
gentleman of Chiddingly (PROB 11/206).

Thomas French was baptised on 23 March 1627 in Chiddingly.
Thomas married married Elizabeth
Woode on 28 March 1654 in Chiddingly.
Thomas and Elizabeth had 2 known

was baptised on 8 April 1655 in Chiddingly.

French was baptised on 13 October 1657 in Chiddingly.
