No possible marriage has been found in the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes
or the IGI. Although Frederick was born in Cuckfield, Sussex and
raised his family there, his marriage to Mary (or anyone else) was not
recorded in the Cuckfield marriage register. He may have first married
Anne.
Frederick
French was baptised on 28 May
1667 in Cuckfield. He was the son of
Richard French (1620-?)
and Elizabeth (c1620-1694).
Mary's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Frederick French and Anne had 1 known child:
-
Elizabeth French was baptised on 31 May 1685 in Cuckfield.
On 6 March 1699, Elizabeth French of Cuckfield was
apprenticed to Richard Cooper, yeoman of Cuckfield,
until her 21st birthday or date of marriage, in housekeeping and
housewifery.
Frederick French and Mary
had 7 known children:
-
Frederick French was baptised on 18 November 1692 in Cuckfield.
On 20 January 1707, 14 year old Frederick French of
Cuckfield was apprenticed to John Piercy, mariner of
Brighton and master of the "Elizabeth and Mary" a vessel of 130 tons,
until he was 21.
Frederick may have married Blanche Clifford on 14 September 1738 in the
Fleet Prison, London. Frederick was then said to be a bachelor and
turner of Brighton. Blanche was a spinster of Addington, Surrey.
-
William French was baptised on 24 Octgober 1694 in Cuckfield.
-
Catherine French was born on 6 April and baptised on 22 May 1696 in
Cuckfield.
-
Ann French was baptised on 8 April 1698 in Cuckfield.
-
Hannah French was baptised on 6
December 1700 in Cuckfield.
-
Mary
French, my 6x Great
Gandmother,
was baptised on 19 June 1702 in
Cuckfield.
Mary married Thomas Lutman on 14 July 1735 in
Cuckfield.
In 1739 a removal order was issued to remove Mary and her
illegitimate children from Shermanbury to Cuckfield. Thomas was then
said to be a tailor of Shermanbury, but it's not clear whether he was
included in the removal order or just mentioned as being Mary's husband.
Mary's children were:
-
Sarah French was baptised on 3 December 1721 in Cuckfield.
Her name was included in the 1739 removal order issued to her mother.
-
Mary French was baptised on 3 April 1727 in Cuckfield. Her
name was also included in the 1739 removal order.
-
Charles
French, my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on
24 January 1729/30 in Cuckfield.
The 1739 removal order recorded that he was 9 years old. He
married Lucy
Gadsby in 1764. (They have their own page.)
-
Sarah French was baptised on 22 February 1704/5 in Cuckfield.
