William FREEMAN (c1600-1670)

and Unknown (?-?)

William Freeman may have been my 9x Great Grandfather.  He left a will dated 14 November 1669 and proved in 1670.  He was then a husbandman of West Grinstead, Sussex.  (Click here to read my transcript of his will.)  He mentioned his wife Jane and 6 children in his will.  William was buried on 8 June 1670 in West Grinstead.

William Freeman may have married Jane Gratwicke or Joan Gratwicke by licence on 21 May 1638 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  Their marriage licence recorded that William was a gent of Shermanbury and Jane a widow of Cowfold.  I don't think this was the William who left the 1669 will.  Instead, I think he married Jane Coates, widow on 23 December 1662 in West Grinstead.  He may have first married Elizabeth Coates in November 1628 in Shipley, or as William Freeman, junior of Shipley he may have married Susan Stempe on 28 June 1632 in Lancing, Sussex.

Widow Jane Coates may as Jane Cragge have married John Coates, junior in December 1647 in Shipley.

A William Freeman of Shipley and a William Freeman, junior, of Shipley both signed the 1641/2 Protestation Return.

William Freeman had 6 known children:

  1. William Freeman was appointed and executor of his father's will.

  2. Richard Freeman, may have been my 8x Great Grandfather.  He was appointed an executor of his father's will.  (He has his own page.)

  3. Jane Freeman was mentioned in her father's will.

Jane married William Batchelor, but so far no possible marriage has been found for them.

  4. Ellinor Freeman was baptised on 3 July 1642 in Shipley, Sussex.  She was mentioned in her father's will.

Eleanor married John Snashall on 19 February 1666/7 in West Grinstead.

  5. Elizabeth Freeman was mentioned in her father's will.

  6. John Freeman was mentioned in his father's 1669 will, at which time he was under 21 years old.  He may have been buried on 22 November 1708 in West Grinstead.  John left a will dated 19 July 1707 - click here to read my transcript of his will.  I think John was most likely a son by William's second marriage to Jane

John married Elizabeth Dowler by banns on 5 May 1698 in West Grinstead.  They were both then of West Grinstead.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward Dowler and Ann
