William Freeman may have been my 9x Great Grandfather. He left a will dated 14 November 1669 and proved in
1670. He was then a husbandman of West Grinstead, Sussex. (Click
read my transcript of his will.) He mentioned his wife Jane and
6 children in his will. William was buried on 8 June 1670 in West
William Freeman may have married Jane Gratwicke or Joan
Gratwicke by licence on 21 May 1638 in Shermanbury, Sussex. Their
marriage licence recorded that William was a gent of Shermanbury and Jane a
widow of Cowfold. I don't think this was the William who left the 1669
will. Instead, I think he married Jane Coates, widow on 23
December 1662 in West Grinstead. He may have first married
Elizabeth Coates in November 1628 in Shipley, or as William Freeman,
junior of Shipley he may have married Susan Stempe on 28 June 1632 in
Widow Jane Coates may as Jane Cragge have married John
Coates, junior in December 1647 in Shipley.
A William Freeman of Shipley and a William Freeman,
junior, of Shipley both signed the 1641/2 Protestation

on 19 February 1666/7 in West Grinstead.
Elizabeth Freeman was mentioned in her father's will.
John Freeman was mentioned in his father's 1669 will, at which time
he was under 21 years old. He may have been buried on 22 November
1708 in West Grinstead. John left a will dated 19 July 1707 - click
read my transcript of his will. I think John was most likely a son
by William's second marriage to Jane
John married Elizabeth Dowler
by banns on 5 May 1698 in West Grinstead. They were both then of
Elizabeth was the daughter of
Dowler and Ann.
