Richard FREEMAN (c1745-1830)

and Mary LISH (1743-1811)

Richard Freeman and Mary Lish married by banns on 20 November 1769 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was then of Ashurst and she of West Grinstead.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Richard was the brother of my 5x great grandfather, John Freeman.)

Richard Freeman's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was the son of Richard Freeman (c1715-1778) and Mary Bennet (1715-?).  He died aged 84 years and was buried on 14 January 1830 in West Grinstead.  Richard was mentioned in his father's 1776 will.  As Richard Freeman the younger he was to receive a legacy of fifty pounds by the terms the 1775 will of his kinsman John Freeman.

Mary Lish was baptised on 21 November 1743 in Ashington, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Lish and Mary Gurr.  She was buried on 26 October 1811 in West Grinstead.  Her father was a miller of Ashington.

A Removal Order was issued on 10 July 1771 and a Settlement Certficate on 15 July 1771 to Richard Freeman, wife Mary and 1 year old son Richard, parishes involved were Ashurst and Washington.

In 1776 Richard Freeman was in occupation of 30 acres of land called Goreland in the parishes of West Grinstead and Ashurst.

Richard Freeman and Mary Lish had 7 known children:

  1. Richard Freeman was baptised on 23 September 1770 in West Grinstead.  He married married Hannah Stoner in 1813.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Thomas Freeman was baptised on 27 June 1773 in Ashington.  He died aged 2 years on 9 September was buried on 13 September 1775 in West Grinstead.

  3. Mary Freeman was baptised on 26 August 1775 in Ashington.  She died aged 19 years on 11 November and was buried on 18 November 1794 in West Grinstead.

  5. Phillis Freeman was baptised on 6 January 1780 in Ashington.  She died aged 36 years in Shoreham and was buried on 6 January 1816 in West Grinstead.
