Richard FREEMAN (c1640-?)

and Unknown (?-?)

Richard Freeman was most probably my 8x Great Grandfather.  He may have married sometime before or about 1685.

Richard Freeman's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He may have been born in the 1640's and have been the son of William Freeman (c1600-1670).  He was mentioned in the 1707 will of his brother John Freeman, at which time Richard was of Shipley, Sussex.  Richard may have died in Ashurst, Sussex and have been buried on 4 August 1743 in West Grinstead, Sussex, but if he was born in the 1640's I would think the burial was of another Richard.  William Freeman appointed his son Richard as an executor to his 1669 will, he also mentioned that his son John was under 21 years old in 1669.

Richard Freeman and unknown had 6 known children:

  1. Richard Freeman, my 7x Great Grandfather, was mentioned in his uncle John's will.  (He has his own page.)

  2. Mary Freeman was mentioned in the will of her uncle John.  Did she or her sister Ann marry a Goacher and then have a son named Daniel Goacher?

  3. John Freeman was born about about 1689.  He died aged 88 years and was buried on 1777 in West Grinstead.  He left a will dated 4 May 1775 and proved on 14 July 1779 - click here to read my transcript of his will.  He appointed his nephew Daniel Goacher as the executor of his will.

John married Susan Beard on 21 April 1719 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  He was then of Shermanbury and she of Henfield.

Susan was baptised on 9 October 1689 in Woodmacote and was the daughter of Edward Beard and Ann.  She was buried on 27 December 1733 in West Grinstead.

John and Susanna have a headstone in West Grinstead, which records that he died aged 88 years on 10 December 1777 whilst she died aged 41(?) on 23 December 1733.

John and Susan had 1 known son:

    1. Edward Freeman was baptised on 17 April 1720 in Shermanbury.  He was buried on 17 December 1733 in West Grinstead.

  4. Ann Freeman was mentioned in the will of her uncle John.  Did she marry Christopher Golds by licence on 15 September 1728 at All Saints in Chichester?  Their marriage licence was issued on 14 September 1728 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, and it recorded that Christopher was a bachelor and yeoman whilst Ann was a spinster.  They were both of Ashington.  The sponsors of their licence were Christopher himself and Richard Freeman a tailor of Ashurst.  (Was Richard her father or brother or uncle?)  And, did Christopher and Ann have a son named John Golds who married Mary West by licence on 12 May 1756 in Ashurst?  At the time John was a husbandman and Mary a spinster and they were both of Ashurst.  Sponsors of their marriage licence were John himself and John Freeman a farmer of Henfield.

  5. Jane Freeman she was mentioned in her brother John's will as Jane Rutter.

  6. Frances Freeman was mentioned in her uncle John's will.  She was buried in West Grinstead in 1784.

Frances married Edward Wickerson sometime before1733, but so far no possible marriage has been found for them.

Edward was baptised on 6 January 1700 in Shermanbury and was the son of Thomas Wickenson and Elizabeth Denney.  He left a will dated 10 November 1757 and proved on 11 January 1797 - click here to read my transcript of his will.

Edward and Frances had 3 known children:

    1. Edward Wickerson was baptised on 5 January 1733 in West Grinstead.

    2. Elizabeth Wickerson was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of John Heyett.  She was then mentioned in her uncle John's will as the wife of Richard Butler.

Elizabeth first married John Herriott by banns on 27 May 1755 in West Grinstead.  He was then of Nuthurst and she a spinster of West Grinstead.  As a widow Elizabeth Heryat married Richard Butcher by banns on 26 June 1770 in Ashurst.  He was then a bachelor and they were both of Ashurst.

    3. John Wickerson was born about 1737 and baptised on 5 September 1739 in West Grinstead.  John died aged 19 and was buried in West Grinstead in 1756.
